Thanksgiving Tip: How To Cure Turkey Neck
November 26, 2009 by Lucie Larancuent-Domenech

Scarves and turtleneck sweaters are the less expensive and least invasive “cures” for turkey neck. This delicate part of the anatomy can begin sagging and drooping due to weight loss or gain, laxity of the platysma muscle, swollen neck cords or loose skin. The cure can be determined by the cause and the extent of the sagging. Treatments range from skin creams to surgery. Your pocketbook and determination are a significant factor on what may be best for you.

Causes and Cures:
1. Take a good look at your chin in the mirror. Liposuction can cure neck sags by tightening loose skin due to fat.
2. In mild cases of turkey neck, you can choose Thermage or Fraxel laser treatment, which remove age spots, stimulate collagen and tighten skin. While recovery from laser treatment can take two to three days, your skin can remain red and blotchy for two to three weeks. More than one Thermage or Fraxel treatment is usually necessary, so you may want to inquire about a package deal.
3. Apply a retinoid or retinol cream to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin in order to tighten a wrinkled turkey neck. You can also restore some of the neck’s elasticity by using a topical vitamin c serum. Do not use a retinoid, retinol cream or a topical vitamin c serum more than two or three times per week in order to avoid skin irritation.
4. Botox injections will relax prominent bands on the neck and soften horizontal wrinkles. Keep in mind that Botox only lasts one to six months.
5. With significant sagging, surgery is the most effective and long-lasting treatment. Surgeons cut behind the ears, suction fat, tighten or shorten
the platysma muscle and sculpt the neck in a matter of hours. Keep in mind that recovery takes two to three weeks and that the cost is about $10,000. For this price, make sure that they insert a sling inside the neck skin which they can then tighten as needed without further invasive surgery. Seriously, this is a new procedure!
The best cure of all is prevention. You can exercise to keep neck muscles taut. When gargling, push your bottom teeth in front of your top teeth until you feel the muscles stretching. Hold for 10 seconds and then relax. You can also press the tongue firmly against the roof of your mouth up to 10 times two or three times a week.
Happy Turkey Day and may there be no future turkey neck for you!

Anti-aging ingredients are very tricky: too much can wreak havoc, but the right amount can make a big difference. If you go overboard and try everything all at once, you can end up with inflamed, irritated skin.
Follow these guidelines in order to make sure that your skin stays calm:
Make sure to use one product at a time so that if there is skin irritation, you can determine which product caused it.
Generally speaking, antioxidants should be worn during the day and retinoids should be worn at night. Remember to never mix benzoyl peroxide (used to treat acne) with retinoids.
