Desperately Seeking Superfoods
“Could grandma have been right about carrots making you see in the darK?Human beings have always sought the fountain of youth. At the very least, we want that elusive silver bullet that will keep us feeling bright-eyed and bushy-tailed well into old age.
Could it be garlic? How about broccoli?
The hunt is on for superfoods: Foods with extra nutritional oomph, qualities that will supposedly combat all those vile trans fats and vicious free radicals that cause premature aging. (Free radicals are harmful molecules that are blamed for cancer, heart disease, even Alzheimer’s.)”
I certainly like the idea of eating my way younger and I’m certainly going to be on the lookout for this acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) berry. Until just a few minutes ago I hadn’t even heard of it, but apparently it is THE superfood of all time. And just in case you are wondering, the berry comes from an Amazon palm tree so I guess planting a bush is out of the question.
It seems that until these berries make it to our supermarkets or health food stores, I will will settle for my regular old garden vegetables. But I will be waiting in line for my very first acai smoothie. I hear that it tastes like blueberries, black currants, chokecherry and dark chocolate. Sounds pretty good to me.
