Aging Fabulous

Have You Had Your Mammogram This Year?

With all the talk of October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, I seem to hear – as I do promote this myself – all about the pink products. Yes, pink products do a great job of helping us all give back to various breast cancer charities, and remind us how much help is needed. And hey, pink is pretty, and who doesn’t want another excuse to go shopping. But what I am constantly disappointed in, is the amount of times that mammograms get mentioned during the month of October.

Mammograms are so important to women as they are one of the most important tool that the medical community offers to diagnose and evaluate breast cancer. Leading experts, the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the American College of Radiology now recommend annual mammograms for women over 40.

Now, while mammograms can not prevent breast cancer, they play such an important part by finding breast cancer as early as possible.

Mammograms have been shown to lower the risk of dying from breast cancer by 35% in women over the age of 50; studies suggest for women between 40 and 50 they may lower the risk of dying from breast cancer by 25–35%.
