Hump Day Health: Cut Your Risk of Stroke by 40%.

I read a very interesting article last week that I book marked and knew I needed to share. It seems simple and easy, and knowing that it can cut the risk of having a stroke by about 40%, it is something that we all need to do.

About 780,000 U.S. adults suffer a stroke each year, and stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States, according to the American Stroke Association. About 150,000 people die from strokes annually, making it the nation’s No. 3 cause of death.

A moderate level of aerobic fitness can significantly reduce stroke risk in both men and women, according to a long-running study just presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference.

The study showed:

30 minutes or more of brisk walking, or an equivalent aerobic activity, five days a week could lower stroke risk by about 40 percent.

I am into a new walking/exercise kick, so besides knowing that I am helping my self to lose weight and get into better shape, I know that it is helping my health. Maybe knowing that doing this, as suggested, can cut down my risk of stroke by 40%, is even more of an incentive.

Good for you to develop a new exercise program. I am only exercising about 3-4 times per week right now. When spring gets here, I’ll do so much better.

    Good for you!

I do 30 minutes of cardio daily and am glad to hear some data that proves I’m not just killing myself for nothing! lol

And yes, it is great to now that this exercise and sweat is good for more than just looking and feeling better.

    Teri,

It really doesn’t take much to improve our health…it takes the will to have a better quality of life.

That was a good article Teri,

Great article! It’s true that we can lose weight only by only walking. However, to do that, one must walk at least 10,000+ steps per day! Most people just get 3,000 steps per day. A good way to track how many steps you’ve taken is by getting a pedometer. My dad got me one and it really shows how much I’ve been walking (which is not really good at all).
