Did you know that May is Melanoma Awareness month? In trying to bring about awareness via prevention and skin screenings, The Skin Cancer Foundation’s “Road to Healthy Skin Tour” presented by Aveeno and Rite Aid kicked off on Friday.

The tour will offer free full body skin cancer screenings in a private room inside a 38-foot customized RV by local dermatologists that have donated their time to helping the cause.  The RV will visit more than 50 cities at 100 different Rite Aid locations across the country, and is expected to screen more than 10,000 consumers between May and October.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, diagnosed in a million people annually, but it is also the most preventable and curable form of cancer if it is detected early.  The goal of this tour is to educate people nationwide about the importance of getting an annual skin check with their doctor, and get the message out that it is crucial for everyone, no matter their skin color, to start wearing a sunblock with at least an SPF of 15 or higher every day, all year long.

You can check out dates, locations and more about the tour at SkinCancer.org.

That’s a great thing they’re doing. I’m glad it’s free! I wish they were coming my way, but they’re not even coming close to me. I’ve been cursed with fare skin, and I’m always worried about skin cancer. Where sunscreen people!

  2. Lori says:

There were two studies just released saying that individuals who had higher amounts of vitamin D and calcium have a lower risk of colon cancer.

  3. Teri says:

I know, RyanNY - I wish the screenings were given in more places and by more clinics free of charge. It would definitely be worth it in the long run.

  4. Teri says:

Lori - I recently heard that too. I heard that Vitamin D was beneficial for lowering the risk of breast cancer too.
