I don’t know why, but I simply can’t stand the stuff… all except tuna. My family on the other hand loves fish of all sorts which means that we visit a lot of sea food restaurants and all that gorgeous fish and whatever you call the rest of it, is lost on me. All those nutrients are simply passing me by and that kind of worries me. So, I did a little googling to see just how healthy tuna is for you and I think that I will be adding a lot more of it to my diet. Here’s what I found out…

“Omega-3 fatty acids provide a broad array of cardiovascular benefits. Omega-3s benefit the cardiovascular system by helping to prevent erratic heart rhythms, making blood less likely to clot inside arteries (which is the ultimate cause of most heart attacks), and improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to potentially harmful (LDL) cholesterol. And, as mentioned above, omega-3s reduce inflammation, which is a key component in the processes that turn cholesterol into artery-clogging plaques. In a recent population-based prospective study, modest consumption of tuna was actually found to be associated with lower risk of death from ischemic heart disease in individuals 65 years and older. ”

And tuna contains a lot of that Omega-3 fatty acids, so if heart disease runs in your family as it does in mine, it might be a really good idea to start eating more of the stuff. And if you are a big fish lover, a tuna sandwich is a pretty good place to start! A few more cans are definitely going on my shopping list for next week.

Compared with those who abstain from alcohol, people who consumed 1 to 6 drinks per week were about 16 percent less likely to suffer from heart failure or die of cardiovascular disease, and those who had 7 to 13 drinks per week were about 30 percent less likely to have these problems. ”

And she did more traveling after the age of 65 than you could imagine.
