Spring’s Sexiest Makeup Tips

Spring is almost here and with that comes all of the trends straight off the runways and into the pages of beauty magazines everywhere. We all know that a wash of a shimmery shadow on your top eyelids is pretty, and that’s all there is to it. But the latest trend that makeup pros are doing for spring is sweeping the same shade beneath the eyes for a look that is extremely feminine and glowy 24/7.

To create this look on yourself I suggest using your fingers for a sheer application especially on the lids, and for extra pigment an eyeshadow brush is perfect. You can use the same brush to sweep the color underneath the eye too. For a beautiful glow on the lids try using an eyeshadow in a light shimmer. Lavender is very pretty and looks great on both light and dark complexions. It’s also less messy and so gorgeous for spring, and yes, women in their 30’s and 40’s can wear colors like this. I do and have been for years.

I know what you’re thinking, I could never wear this at my age, but yes you can. You don’t have to use the exact colors as seen above but something fun for a night out with the girls. Why not? To get this stylin’ look start by adding a pink or purple shadow at your eye’s inner corner blending it up and slightly over the crease of eye. You can use pinks and purples in lighter shade if you prefer.

Next, swipe a shimmery gray or silver below your eye and extend to the outer corner blending up into the crease. A blender brush or medium sized eyeshadow brush is the easiest way to achieve this. For a softer line underneath the eyes smudge with a Q-tip, and get Rock Star lashes by applying a tight black gel liner on the top lids and two coats of mascara. Lash clusters on the ends of each eye are opptional:-)

For lips that scream to be noticed slick on a cream formula right from the tube and use a Q-tip dipped in a bit of face cream to wipe away any smudges. Brush on a pale pink gloss, and for those who desire a fuller lower lip add a touch of a light shimmer powder to the middle of lips. Much easier than a collagen injection, and just as sexy. Finish by applying a concealer with a concealer brush all around your mouth. It gives your lips great definition and perfection without using a lip pencil.

Life’s Little Surprises – January 13th

When we are open to them, they suddenly seem to fall into our laps. And that is not a bad thing. There are good surprises too! I’m sure that Steve at Aging Hipster notices lots of little surprises when he goes for his long treks in the country. I really need to do more of that. An incentive… there is a pretty impressive drugstore 2 1/2 kilometers from here. I could always treat myself to another tube of lipstick once I arrive! I think that is fair!

What color is your lipstick?

Well, most of you know that I have an issue with how white my teeth use to be and aren’t anymore. Does that make sense? I asked the dentist about it once and he said that it is an aging thing. Something about light, but I can’t remember anything else. And no, I’m not going to make an appointment just to ask him. It can wait!

But I do remember reading somewhere that the color of your lipstick can either make your teeth look white or the most dismal shade of yellow imaginable. Have you ever noticed? Now I know why I always liked those berry shades!

Off to toss every tube of lipstick that doesn’t remind me of a strawberry.

It’s Saturday and that means we go shopping!!

I think that I have been wearing lipstick since I was about twelve years old and that would include pretty much every color in the rainbow. So this morning I thought I would look up what other people feel about lipstick. Here’s what I found!

I only have to do three things to look halfway decent, curl my eyelashes, fill in my eyebrows and put some lipstick on.

Now this might take some practice and a bit of time, but it will all be worth it when your kids come home for a visit and see just how cool you look!

10 Minute Makeup

Okay, you have a little time today so you are going to add a few steps that you usually… ignore. Feeling guilty… don’t even think about it. My regular day makeup is about 3 minutes tops. This is a whole seven extra minutes!!

1. Apply a cold compress to the eye area to reduce any puffiness. Take advantage and stretch out on the sofa for a few minutes.

2. Apply moisturizer and allow it to soak in.

3. Dot on foundation and blend. Using a sponge will help tremendously with this particular step. Check that there is no foundation line on neck. I can’t believe that I used to use my fingers for this step. A sponge or better yet, a foundation brush is so much better.

4. Apply concealing cream to blemishes or dark circles using tip of fingers. Just a tiny bit is sufficient. You don’t want to draw attention to the problem area.

5. Brush brows into position. Check for holes in the brows from over-plucking.

6. Apply color to brows if necessary. Brow Zings by Benefit is incredible, but a little hair gel will help hold them in place if you are in a pinch.

7. Apply eye shadow. A brush can offer a lot more control that a sponge applicator. To darken the color, simply add another layer of color. Each layer will intensify the shade. I usually apply blush right about now.

8. Apply eye liner. There are lots of liners to choose from. If you have oily lids, a solid liner applied with a little water and a brush, works well. But this takes practice!

9. Curl your lashes. Mine are bone straight and way too short. I’m even considering lash extensions!

10. Apply mascara. Two layers are usually better than one. But be sure that you comb out any lumps that might build up.

11. Apply lip color. Using a brush will ensure a thinner coat of lipstick and a prettier lip line, not to mention staying power.

12. Set makeup with a little loose powder and a fluffy brush.

13. Check your blush and add a tiny bit more if necessary.

*Fish Scales on Your Lips

Did you know that fish scales were once used to give your lipstick that frosty appearance? I’m glad to say that they found a new way to give our latest lipsticks the same effect. Awe… the stuff I remember, but I’m not done quite yet.

Did you know that according to Kline & Company, in 1959 alone, Americans bought 62 million tubes of lipstick! That is a lot of lipstick and now that women use more than one tube at a time, the numbers must be astromical. Any idea how many tubes of lipstick you own at this very moment?

Aging Gracefully and Your Makeup

I’m giving Teri the benefit of the doubt here. I’m saying that someone else did her makeup for the Grammys and applied it with a little too heavy a hand. There is way too much eye makeup, and even the color of her lipstick just wasn’t right. Her makeup artist needs to learn the meaning of subtle!

There is a rule of thumb here. As you get older, you will want to add less and less makeup. The last thing you want to do is emphasize every little line that you have acquired. Enough said.
