Okay, after Cassie left a little “Pirate Talk” in my comments, I had to go looking to see if I could find the origins of “shiver me timbers”. Here’s what I found…
“Timber is a curving frame branching outward from the keel of a ship and bending upward in a vertical direction that is usually composed of several pieces united. And…shiver is 2 : to tremble in the wind as it strikes first one and then the other side (of a sail) transitive senses : to cause (a sail) to shiver by steering close to the wind. So if you want to sneak in a few “ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRs” it’s perfectly okay.
Actually my husband has been doing it all morning long. And I’m sure that he will carry on the minute he walks into the office.
We first came upon the holiday when we were vacationing in Cornwall, England and heard the djs talking about it on the radio. We thought it was a British thing. Obviously not!!
