My mother loves parties. She loves to give them, and she loves to go to them. And we are always expected to give her a birthday party of some sort.

For her 50th, my father rented a beautiful room at a hotel for a sit down dinner. We surprised her with friends and family from out of town, who stayed at the hotel, and made a weekend out of it.

For her 60th, we rented the most gorgeous casino suite and and invited a lot of people who came for the day and night, again with many out of towners staying overnight. This was a fabulous party, as the suite was over the top and amazing.

Now, it is her 65th birthday in a few months. My sister and I are sort of perplexed as to what to do.

Do we throw another big party, or is it too soon after the last one? Do we wait until her 70th? Or is life just too short, and because she loves parties and surprises so much, we spoil her with another one?

I usually do not get too personal here, well – maybe I do now and again, but I need help from those not involved to see how you feel.

My thoughts go toward the family and friends from a far. I hate to put a strain on them, as many are getting older as well, and travel may not be feasible. Do we just do up a big soiree and hope many decide to come, or do we throw a little extra special party at home with just family and friends that are local.

I would love your thoughts! If it were you, what party would you like?

As many of you have probably seen on all of the newspaper and television reports that a study has been published about the different amounts of lead in lipsticks. Who sponsored and published the study? The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics.

I am a skeptic, as I always am. I do not know how much credit I put into the report as it is a bit biased. I would feel better and maybe worry more if the study were produced by the FDA or a medical community. My thoughts are that most, MOST, of the lipsticks that were tested, actually contained smaller amounts of lead that are allowed by the FDA in candy. Now, candy is often eaten by children, is it not? Nah, I am not very worried. I do not eat my lipstick even though I know a bit of it must get ingested.

I have heard that this could be a PR nightmare, but as I have not heard one thing from any of the PR people I work with, they are not worried. I have worked with many of the brands that were mentioned in the report, and I am sure they are aware of it.

I am one of those people who think that my parents only did it enough times to conceive a child, because just the thought of anything more is – oh yuck – I don’t even have the right word for it. Now, I am sure my kiddos feel the same way about my husband and I. But I hear that sex gets better with age, and I overheard a conversation last night that made my chuckle.

These two women, that had to be well into their seventies, were talking about “quickies” and how they are really having the best sex of their life. Why I am so put off, I do not know. Maybe just the fact that they were older, almost grandmother figures, or the fact that they were so openly speaking about it in such a public setting. We (me and my two youngest) were eating at a family friendly restaurant.

So, I was rude to be listening in, and wrong to judge – maybe. But it really makes me wonder if sex gets better with age.

As we get older, there are no pregnancy worries (well, usually not) and hopefully no std worries. Let me think. The kids should be out of the house. There are probably not work stresses – hmmm. More time to enjoy it all?

I am at a time in my life when sex is not all that important to me. Maybe it is, and I am just too busy or too tired to notice. I am a very busy 40 year old mom of 4, and most of my friends and I are in agreement. And it is funny, though not really, that all of our husbands are in disagreement with us.

I guess I am hoping that as I get older I too can say, that I am having the best sex of my life. I certainly know my husband is waiting for that day to come. I guess as long as I am not too tired .

Who here is having the best sex of their life, and when can I (tell my husband) expect to?

There is the physical from the primary care Doctor, the annual Pap Smear from the Gynecologist, the Mammogram, and if applicable, the colonoscopy, bone density scans, etc.
This year, we are doing something different in my family. Today is my mother’s birthday. Her wish is for us all to make our Doctor’s appointments a little early this year.

Every year, on our birthdays, we are always reminded that is time to make the yearly Doctor appointments.

As we have been dealt with a devastating blow just two months ago when my brother was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma Multiforme (a very aggressive, cancerous brain tumor), she wants us to do what we can for not only prevention, but for early diagnosis.

There are so many things that we cannot prevent, but as well, there are so many things that can be prevented with diet and medicine. And early diagnosis is such a key in fighting so many diseases. It is unfortunate when a disease cannot be detected through standard medical tests and only presents itself with symptoms, as in the case of my brother. Be sure to discuss with your Doctor anything that is bothering you, symptom-wise, even if you feel funny asking them about it.

So, I made my annual physical appointment, mammogram, GYN visit, and scheduled a meeting with a gastroenterologist about possibly having a colonoscopy. I will be 40 this year, and my sister is having one tomorrow, as she had a little problem, and my father just had a pre-cancerous polyp removed from his colon last month.

Please join me and make your annual Doctor appointments if you have not yet this year, or have let them lapse. We cannot age fabulously, if we cannot age healthily.
