Since I sell brushes, in addition to being a self-proclaimed brush whore, I’ve tried all sorts of brush cleaners on both synthetic and natural hair brushes. I have found that Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap (the liquid) is by far and away the very best brush cleaner I’ve ever used. It’s far less expensive than most brush cleaners, sucks everything out in a jiffy and really gives it a deep clean while still allowing your brushes to dry quickly (natural hair will dry quicker than synthetic). The Tea Tree has antibacterial properties, or you can choose one of any number of other scents that also leave your brushes smelling good (almond is my personal favorite). It’s also gentle on the hairs and will keep your brushes lasting forever.
