An ancient modern art

I’ve heard amazing things about Shoyeido, a renowned brand of Japanese incense. This article in the NYT made me want to visit right away!
There are more than 150 scents in the LISN range, all of which are blended according to the ancient methods of Kyoto’s Imperial Palace. But where traditional incense blends might be dominated by sandalwood and aloeswood, the LISN range features floral and fruit-infused scents, among others. Sticks are embossed with English phrases like Norwegian Wood and Quiet Flowers, as well as the rather more enigmatic Filled.
The sticks are accompanied by minimalist incense holders and packaged in sleek, iridescent boxes that are themselves miniature triumphs in design. Especially popular are the travel accessories (such as pocket-size incense carriers with built-in holders), which are aimed at people who use incense in their hotel rooms.
Looking at their American online storefront, there’s a dizzying array of scents and prices (up to $500 for a box of 35 incense sticks!!!)
