Geek Chic Cthulu Necklace

I love how when high design items have literary references they’re “intellectual” or “high-brow”, but if something handmade has literary references it’s geek chic. Ah, well, I love the geek chic moniker, so I’m sticking with it. This one’s for all you hidden H.P. Lovecraft fans out there or budding young steampunks.
Even if you’re not into Lovecraft and think steampunk is a type of train, I think you still might this necklace. It’s like a jewel collage, made of a watch movement, this cute little cthulu/squid, and some sterling accents. I love the multi-layered, intricately detailed ornamentation, and of course, the wee sea creature is a sure hit with me. I also love the artist’s loving description of the piece: “Cthulhu crouches warningly over its precious abalone gem, set atop a vintage jewelled watch movement, swaying under an ornate silver ox bail.” I’m not sure what an ox bail is, but this piece was definitely made with love. Available for $36 from Pink Water Fairy.

I’m glad I stumbled on this entry! My sister’s a proud self-proclaimed “steampunk” and lover of all things fantastical and dystopian — luckily she gracefully made the transition from goth to steampunk, and this necklace is just her style. I’ve added it to my list of possible Christmas gifts for her this year. Thanks for the review!
