Recapturing the ’80’s

In case you haven’t heard, the ’80s are back with a vengeance, and big hair is only a part of it.

Hair and BeautyWant to steal that new wave look – and make it all the more modern and hot?

There are a few easy steps anyone can take to re-create and update 80’s hair without the over-processed look and chemicals used in that decade. We asked celebrity stylist Philip Pelusi for his thoughts.

1. Start with a great cut. To ensure versatility and hold for different 80’s styles, a longer layered cut with thicker ends will allow lots of styling options and absorb product easily – from a cropped cut to a bob to long hair – keeping layers on the longer side with a Volumetric cut can let you create a variety of looks, like a spiky “punk” or big voluminous waves with the right products.
2. Instead of “mall bangs” that are poofy and frizz, try thick, blunt bangs, but keep them sleek. Use an anti-frizz paste, like P2 polish and roll brush to smooth whole blow drying on low heat.
3. To get that 80’s volume without the “fried” look – Style hair in a half-up/half-down style – teasing hair at the crown and sweeping the front pieces away from the face.
4. To achieve a “new wave” and tons of 80s-inspired volume in straight or fine hair – Spray a volumizing product like P2’s Increase directly on the roots, then roll small sections into pin curls all over the head. Leave to air dry for about 20 minutes. Let hair down and lightly blow dry with head upside down, scrunching up as it dries. Or air dry and scrunch for big curls without 80s crunchiness or frizz. For naturally curly hair, apply a curl taming product like P2 reCurl and let hair dry – big, sexy hair!
