Beauty researcher and founder of VMV Hypoallergenics, Dr. Vermen Verallo-Rowell, took the time to answer some questions for Skin Principles about what to expect in 2009 and what every woman should consider about
when building a solid skin care routine.
VMV Hypoallergenics is one of the most popular skin care lines for sensitive skin in Asia, with an extensive range of products and rigorous testing to ensure even the most sensitive skin doesn’t become irritated.
RS: Dr. Verallo-Rowell, how has cosmeceuticals changed in the last year?
VMV: More laboratory chemicals are appearing in the marketplace, but without good clinical studies to prove that what happened to cells/ingredients/interaction/enzymes in the laboratory also happen with actual use on the skin. Hence, the user should be aware of this, especially in regards to expectations of the products. The stem cells, fibroblasts, growth factors, antioxidants, life-extending products, and regenerative products appearing these days are amazing and technology is coming a long way in upgrading products, however, proper studies are needed to really gauge effects.
RS: What do you predict will be the biggest trend in the cosmeceuticals industry in 2009?
VMV: More antiaging and regenerative products will appear on the market. With the stresses of today’s world, the skin will suffer, and this will be obvious, so people will need to be looking for these types of products.
RS: What can young women do to preserve that healthy glow as they age?
VMV: I always recommend “using the acids†to provide regular exfoliation, keeping new skin cells on top and allowing products to work on these cells as opposed to older, dead skin cells that make faces look dull. Oil soluble acids like Retinoic Acid, Retinoids and Salicylic Acid are good for really deep effects. I recommend
RS: This is all incredibly useful information, Dr. Verallo-Rowell! Finally, what is the most important type of product you recommend every woman use?
VMV: Sunscreens for daily use on the face. I can’t stress enough how important this is!
