5. Claire Danes – Claire is often under the radar. You don’t hear too much about her when she’s not currently promoting a film, living quietly. But when you see her, it’s hard to miss her. She never stands out by wearing something overly daring or extravagant; she stands out by wearing something that is simply beautiful with clean lines that looks gorgeous on her.

4. Anne Hathaway – I love seeing pictures of Anne when she’s out on the red carpet or attending some sort of special event. Her clothing style is always a combination of classic and something new. You sort of get the feeling that if you look back at her 20 years from now, you’ll still think she looked amazing.

3. Vanessa Hudgens – Vanessa is very young still, but she’s got a great start when it comes to being a classic Hollywood beauty. Between her long dark waves and the gowns she chooses, she always looks picture perfect. She may have made some mistakes in life (those naked photos will haunt her forever, I fear), but she more than makes up for it on the red carpet and in the end people will remember her more for what she did wear than what she didn’t.

2. Katie Holmes – Here’s the interesting thing about Katie: I don’t always like what she wears. Honestly, I sometimes think she wears very strange things (though I love that dress in the picture above!). But when it comes to Katie, it still works as far as style is concerned because she wears the things that she likes, doesn’t attempt to wear something just for the shock value, and does her own thing. In that sense she almost reminds me of Diane Keaton who would show up wearing suits when everyone else was in a gown. She marches to her own style drum!

1. Angelina Jolie – I may be biased but to me Angelina is the epitome of old school Hollywood beauty. She has the long hair, the bewitching smile, the bedroom eyes, and every dress she wears ends up being spectacular on her. Even my least favorite of her dresses have still looked incredible on her in the end. She could wear a paper bag and still look stunning. That’s because she wears the clothes – the clothes never, EVER wear her. Really though, you don’t need to look exactly like Angelina to look as good as she does. The reason she always looks so perfect in front of the cameras is because of the self-confidence she has, and that’s the staple of every iconic Hollywood bombshell in the history of Tinseltown.

What really caught my eye though – you know, aside from her beautiful face! – was her bold, chunky necklace. It really stands out. A white dress is pretty but can blend into the background but the addition of this particular necklace added a punch of interest that might not have otherwise been there.

Get Vanessa’s dress and look …

I asked Caroline specifically about what is hot for prom.

“You can definitely look at Sharpay for color. I think the metallics are really big. You can see that in the silver, the cobalt blue and the fuchsia. I think those are huge colors. I definitely think there’s a big 80s influence going on. The side tie or the knotting the t-shirts on the side, or the preppy look. Definitely they are pulling the collars up. Definitely the old-school Madonna, a lot of the loggings, multiple strands of pearls, the bangles, the rubber bracelets as seen on Martha. Definitely use lots of pins on Olesya’s jackets, blazers and vests. That was 80s inspired. I used really long scarves that come down to the knee, that’s a big trend that’s going on right now. Monique with her little tie was kind of cute. Zac with the skinny jeans and the fitted t-shirts, are definitely big, along with the skinny ties. Ryan with the military stripes that go down the side of his legs, and the fedoras. Those are some good ones! Individuality is the big thing, enhancing your personality. Primarily that’s where I went with this.

“I felt that anyone could go out and attain these looks without spending a lot of money on them!”

Caroline also identifies her thoughts about each character/actor, and the brands that they wore:

TROY (Zac Effron) – A James Dean/Young Elvis look, with a color palate of mostly blue and gray tones. Troy wears primarily slim-cut Diesel denim jeans and James Perse classic tees with Converse high-top sneakers or low-top Vans.

GABRIELLA (Vanessa Hudgen) – A very innocent, girl-next-door feel. She starts in her quintessential white, blue, green and yellow floral dresses, sometimes with little cardigans. As time passes in the film, she becomes more self- aware and begins to take on a more ‘boho’ style of dress. In the film, Hudgens wears clothes by American Eagle, Free People, Velvet, Miss Sixty, and Dutch designer Tony Cohen.

SHARPAY (Ashley Tisdale) – Very expensive and over-the-top, with the majority of her clothes enhanced with Swarovski crystals and focused on hot pink and feathers. Labels include Marc Jacobs, Miss Sixty, L.A.M.B., Dolce & Gabbana, Juicy Couture, Betsey Johnson, Diesel, Sheri Bodell, Rock n Republic boots and oversized bags, and accessories from Kitson.

RYAN (Lucas Gabreel) – As Sharpay’s brother, his look is also very expensive and directly from the runway with neon pink Marc Jacobs pants, a J. Lindenberg nylon blazer and Paul Smith floral pants tucked into police boots. Distinguished by his Goorin Bros. fedora hat and for the prom, he sports a bowler hat, inspired by a popular Spanish trend.

CHAD (Corbin Bleu) - A very eco-friendly vibe with primarily organic and sustainable clothing and shoes. His American Apparel organic tees feature custom ecofriendly messages such as “My dog didn’t eat my homework, I recycled it” and “Greenster.” Labels include G-Star, Livity Outernational, Alternative Earth, Lucky Brand, Nike and Maasi Treads. I made sure we used American Eagle and Free People, Urban Outfitters so it could be accessible and kids could find that stuff.

TAYLOR (Monique Coleman) – A brainiac and business-like with a feminine edge. Taylor wears primarily J. Crew and Banana Republic sweaters and sweater vests over Theory and G-Star button-front shirts (worn untucked), with skirts by Marc Jacobs, Piazza Simione and Corey Lynn Calter.

KELSI (Olesya Rulin) – Very funky and artsy, but with a vintage feel that includes men’s blazers and vests from Club Monaco and French Connection, and vintage character tees by Disney Couture. Kelsi’s primary designer was artist Elisa Jimenez of “Project Runway.”

MARTHA (Kaycee Stroh) – Early Madonna combined with an urban hip-hop flare for a retro 80s vibe. She wears lots of leggings, multiple strands of pearls, bangles, multiple rubber bracelets and bandannas in her hair.

JASON (Ryne Sanborn) - Preppy East Coast jock. He wears polos with the collars worn up, button-down over-shirts worn open and untucked, with either pinstripe, plaid or khaki cargo shorts or jeans.

ZEKE (Chris Warren Jr.) – Young, hip and preppy with a crisp urban flare. He wears oversize polos and shorts.

TIARA (Jemma McKenzie-Brown) – An English schoolgirl look.

JIMMIE (Matt Prokop) – An ‘Emo vibe with a little skater mixed in.

DONNY DION (Justin Martin) – A little conservative with a cool edge.

I started out by asking Caroline about her process for figuring out costumes for a film.

“Basically my job is to create the overall look of the film, and then start delving into each specific character,” she said. “The one thing I think you’ll really notice in High School Musical 3 is that we really made the big screen version of it. There’s definite character definition and everyone has their own individual personality.

“It was kind of a combination of speaking to Kenny Ortega and seeing what his vision was for the overall look for the film, then I brought my ideas to the table as to how I saw each character. Then I talked to the actors, which was really, really important for this film because they’ve been playing these characters for years so I wanted to make sure that we were really true to the character and be true to the fans. So what I tried to do was enhance them and give them more definition. And with this one I feel we brought a strong fashion element to it.”

I was curious to know if Caroline designed the costumes or purchased them.

“It was a combination of both. All of the basketball uniforms, cheerleaders, and the warm-ups, those I designed all of them. I gave them more of a fashion flare, you’ll notice the puff sleeves in the cheerleading stripes, and the cool stripe that just goes down the one side of the back of the skirt, which also translates into the basketball uniforms so that they’re a little more fashion forward. They were all made for fit, so the guys would look sexy, and for flow for dance. Also for color and for lighting, so when they jump and move the light can catch.

“The prom dresses were all designed by me as well, and you can just look at a dress and say ‘oh obviously that’s Gabriella’s’ – very ethereal and flows and feathers and the little flowers. Sharpay’s is like “boom” you know that’s her. The fuchsia was a lot more fashion forward than the bubble gum pink she’d been wearing previously. We took that color right off the runway. It’s got Swarovski crystals on it and feathers all over it, so you can really see that and it’s very fashion forward. With Monique’s prom dress, she’s still got that brainiac feel and conservative edge, it’s very fifties inspired. I put her in a lot of little men’s ties, so you even see on her prom dress that she’s wearing that. It’s cute but you know it’s definitely Monique’s. You see that with Olesya’s, she’s the belle of the ball, a primo ballerina, so we went with that.”

“And the dates matched. Lucas Gabreel was like Fred Estaire. His pants were really short; you can see his black socks underneath. I gave him a cane and I also gave him a bowler hat. Bowler hats are going off in Spain right now, it’s a huge trend, so that’s where we got that. Chad’s character – he’s matching and wearing a white tux with the black piping and on the back it’s still got this little jock edge to go with his personality – with Danford 08 in purple to match Monique’s dress. Zac’s colors matched, very classic and clean. Very fitted with the skinny tie, which is really kind of cool.”

I asked Caroline if it was easier to expand on the existing characters or design for the new ones.

“The thing is that you want to make every single person different. It’s interesting. Normally when I go into a film they don’t exist. I’m the one who comes up with the idea. I do research and kind of look into their character, their personality, where they came from. With the new characters it was definitely like that. In Jimmy, to me, the youngest, hippest kids out have the Emo vibe with the skater mixed in. I chose really cool, up and coming designers like Fyasko and Space Craft with Draven and Vans shoes. That’s what the younger, skater/surfer kids are wearing! With Jemma, I kind of gave her an English school girl look. Really cute and conservative jumpers and blazers. We used a lot of Rugby and Ralph Lauren, American Eagle, argyle sweaters, stuff like that. At the end, in the extended version, you’ll see her in a full blown English riding costume.

“What I tried to do was hone the characters, have them have a little more sense of self and make them like real high school seniors! And they didn’t want to wear little kid clothes either! They’re teenagers, and also they’re very aware that kids are looking up to them, and they wanted to be cool.

“We really did a lot of research in order to obtain all these looks. I felt we did a pretty good job in achieving it.”
