An end to red-rimmed eye-horror (We hope)

November 4, 2008 by Aly Walansky

You are about to enter a time-machine to Aly-dom.

As you are reading this, I am on a press trip in Los Angeles, and probably having a lot of fun – but as I’m WRITING this – I’m super stressed out trying to get done with my projects before heading out.

I’m not sleeping enough, and working wayyyy too many hours each day, and thus, my eyes are making me look sort of like an afterschool special. On top of all that, we are minutes away from a decision in the biggest – and scariest – election in recent memory!

Clearly, I need to chill out…and in doing so, I’m going to help all of you mend your own damage as well. I also need to deal with this red-eye situation before people think I have a whole OTHER sort of problem.

So, whether you are dealing with dry eyes, tired eyes, itchy ones, or sensitivity, you are probably going to like what I’m about to say.

rohto-gift-bag-001.gifI’m giving away, to three lucky readers, a super awesome ROHTO “Cool for Eyes” gift pack, which comes in a trendy Sephora makeup bag, containing:

- Two bottles of ROHTO eye drops in Cool and Arctic

- Soothing gel eye mask
- Bliss Lid + Lash Wash makeup remover

- Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels

- Sephora Lash and Eyebrow Mascara in Clear

- Scott Barnes Eye Ice eye shadow

- The Body Shop Elderflower Eye Gel

These “Cool for Eyes” gift packs are valued at approximately $180 each, and they shall be granted to the three best answers to this questions by November 10: What stresses YOU out? And how do you deal with it?

What is stressing me out at the moment are my dental problems. For the last few years started having some pretty significant problems with my teeth, & over the last few months it has started to accelerate. Worrying about how I’m going to have the problems taken care of with no insurance & a very limited budget is really stressing me out. Every day I just take a deep breath & give thanks for the other blessings in my life, no matter how small they seem.

What stresses me out is automated recordings. It seems as though in order to conduct your daily business you can never talk to a real person live and end up getting lost in the shuffle of if you need this, press 1, to do this press 2, and if none of the above press 3 and you begin the loop of the telephone assistance insanity! At least once a day I need to make some type of business call, whether it be my bank, my health coverage provider, my computer support tech line, you get the idea. It never fails, I get sucked into the abyss and my frustration slowly turns to stress where I find that now I feel the stress before I even make the call because I know what is going to be in store for me. Okay, how do I deal with it, besides wanting to run to the nearest liquor store to grab a nice bottle of chardonnay and kick back a few, I have found that taking my dog Lucy (who is the spunkiest Black Lab) for a nice long brisk walk PRIOR to my making any of those dreaded phone calls is a great stress reliever. I find walking Lucy not only puts me in a carefree happy go lucky mood, but it also relieves any stress that may already be building in me so I am ready to go home and make those business calls. Having a clear mind, an exercised body and a carefree attitude really helps the pre-anxiety I get before I make the calls so when I experience the abyss I am not as apt to get as stressed out as I have in the past. Thanks for letting me share my story and I truly have enjoyed reading what others have said, I am glad I am not the only one that gets stressed out! Here’s to us all living a stress-free life, may be all find that!

  3. Alex says:

I am stressed about money and the fact that we are living paycheck to paycheck.

  4. Terri D says:

Getting an automated answering service on the phone and then being transferred around to different people.

  5. Kat C. says:

    What stresses me out:

    3 papers that need to be written (and written fast);
    A suitcase that needs to be packed;
    Bills that need to be paid;

    …and…

a boyfriend who has recently told me he is marrying…another girl =(

  6. Jenifer M. says:

My life is pretty much poop. But it’s not just that my life is poop, it’s that I’m stressed over all the stink, you know? Firstly, college. I’ve got a room the size of a closet with more uninvited guests than the Playboy Mansion. I’ve got so much homework that a 2 AM bedtime is like a sweet victory. I’ve got a boyfriend who refuses to commit, but even worse, hates my new pixie haircut which (I agree) makes me look like a cross-dressing backup dancer on The Rocky Horror Picture show—and that’s not growing out for a while.

On a more serious note, my dad lost his job at the beginning of last year. My family is two dollars away from living in a camper because of the recession, and I’m here with a bunch of foo-foo college kids who spend their money on Venice weekends. If my dad can’t find a job, there’s no way I’m going to be able to attend my senior year of college, which means it’s time to work in the food industry with 3/4ths of a college degree. I know! Makes me lose sleep, too. And of course, back to Mr. Non-Commit who thinks marriage is a sham while I’m cutting out bridal magazine pictures. Stress! It would save my parents the burden of having to pay for my breakfast cereals and shampoos to get married, but naturally, Mr. No-Go doesn’t believe marriage works. I know!

Of course there’s the little things. I’ve got to find a way to finish college without sending my parents to the slums. I need to find a way to force my boyfriend to take it to the next step, without actually forcing him. I need to find a job that isn’t located inside a McDonald’s or a sweatshop. I need to find a place to live before my roommate murders me, (or I murder my roommate—movies at 3 am? Come on, people!) and finally, I need five minutes were drunken, bad-smelling, belching college students aren’t making fun of my haircut or trying to borrow everything I own. If stress is your friend, you have a friend for life.

  7. Hana says:

One of the things that’s been stressing me out the most lately is getting into arguments with people (mostly about politics) and then having them spiral into personal (verbal) attacks and eventually we just keep saying the same things over and over again instead of coming to any conclusion. >.<

I found the best way to deal with that is to stop the argument and point out that we’re both being silly and suggest that we try to come up with some positive things that we can agree on. And it really seems to work!

And of course money and family and friends are always stressful, but I really do think just trying to be more positive and trying to get other people to be more positive too makes things better for everyone!

  8. Bonnie says:

I’m stressed out by my husband having cancer,he is fighting his second battle, this time they removed part of his kidney, its been almost a year but he is still in so much pain, and going thru tests to see if he may have cancer somewhere eles. It makes sleep hard to come by, I do alot of deep breathing and praying, but I really am still stressed.

  9. crystal says:

I get stressed out in the winter because i worry about my family driving on bad roads. I make myself feel better by talking to them on the phone every night and making sure i always tell them i love them:)

  10. Sito says:

What stresses me out the most is when I am with people who are arguing. Sometimes you can tell just be the set of someone’s mouth that they are having a disagreement with another person in the room. How do I deal with it? I try to make a few neutral comments and then run away.

  11. jennifer gersch says:

time constraints stress me out. I deal by hot baths and walking my dogs

  12. kathy pease says:

my 16 and 17 year old daughters really stress me out.they are at the age where they think they know it all and they talk back..sometime i feel like just running away..wish i had somewhere to go..lol
i usually deal with this by locking myself in the bathroom and turning on some soft music and taking a long hot bubble bath..i stay there till the water starts getting cold :(

  13. diane says:

Three daughters getting ready for college every morning at the same time–and only 2 bathrooms in the house! add a 16-month old toddler to the group~who thinks SHE has to stay right in the middle of all of them and”get pretty” too, and it’s enough to stress ANYbody out! I handle things pretty well for the most part but there are some days when it seems as if everyone is running around in the same circle and not one of us is getting anywhere. But then when the girls are off to school and gramma is left to babysit for the day, things always seeem better with a make-believe cup of tea with my granddaughter!

  14. Kate says:

Honestly, right at this minute I am stressing over all the leaves in my backyard and how I am going to get them in a big pile so my son can jump in them. Then I look in the excited eyes of my son and all the stress goes out the window. Hand over that rake!!!

  15. Davina says:

What stresses me out is when the kids cry and carry on for no reason.

  16. jessica lewis says:

    work stresses me out

  17. jessica lewis says:

    the economy stresses me out

  18. amber says:

Rent stresses me out! Why oh why does it have to be paid every month? Thats no fun ;) It leaves little cash to actually have fun with and get those girly extras that are “wants” rather than “needs”. To de-stress, I do a lot of part-time freelance jobs for cas. As an added bonus, I like to de-stress with a hot bath and a small glass of wine.

    Thanks for this awesome giveaway!

  19. Leanna says:

Stress? I’m a high school teacher. Enough said! ;)

My friends and I sing karaoke either w.the PS2 or the real thing…we laugh so much that it relieves the stress!

  20. Helen says:

My work stresses me out! I work in real estate and with the market down and the economy being so bad things are even more stressful than usual. It’s a high energy job that’s constantly changing so you have to be prepared for anything to happen – ANYTHING! I find cooking calms me down. I just love to cook various foods and watch the Food Network religiously for ideas. That centers me and gives me peace.

  21. Renee We says:

I found a phychirist helped me deal with the stress of losing a loved one (saying goodbye to a suicide).

  22. Charlene Kuser says:

My work stresses me out.I work with the public
and it can become very stressful, since
you always have to please the customer.I
have found out sometimes it helps to take deep breaths and stretch out a little it helps the
tight muscles and then when I get home I
take a nice warm bath with classical music.
    That usually does the job

  23. Heather C says:

Neighbors playing loud music with too much base, higher taxes, ADHD people, irritating commercials, hang-up calls, stinky feet, weeds, ticks walking around in my house, spam, lack of sleep and jiggle brought on by my favorite food: bread.

  24. faith24 says:

I get stressed out by too many things this year. I am still job hunting and it’s been months now. I am also full time student and school is always stressful, especially that i am a teaching assistant to 2 of my professors. I also don’t know how to say “no” to people that try to use others, so I end up helping to some people when I dont really feel like it or when I am too tired. I combat this frustration by volunteering. Nothing feels better thatn hearing someone say “Thank you so much!” and knowing that a few hours of my time make a difference to many needy people. I also tend to get very red eyes from my contacts and this prize would be wonderful . Thanks!
