Bare Minerals

Bare Minerals

Every time I see Bare Minerals on television I get a little closer to trying them out. I have heard nothing but great things about the product and, man, is that infomercial a great sales tool (I am a sucker for a good sales pitch, and I also think it gets to me subconsciously when I fall asleep with the TV on)! If you aren’t aware of what Bare Minerals is, it is a loose powder foundation, made entirely of finely milled minerals, that appears to leave your skin quite flawless looking, has an SPF of 15 (supremely important to me) and is approved and endorsed by the Skin Cancer Foundation. I think this is what might put me over the edge and order some. Users (and the infomercial) claim that the coverage is natural looking but very good, and that it won’t clog your pores and can even improve a problem with blemishes/acne.

I spent a good bit of time today reading about Bare Minerals on Epinions, and most of the negatives came from people that were not able to get the application technique correct. I think I can manage that, we can all do just about anything with some practice! You can buy the kits at BareMinerals.com, and probably the individual products, but it is much easier shopping for them (and there is a lot of extra information) at Sephora.
Do you use, or have you tried Bare Minerals? I sure would love some opinions from you if you have!

I’ve been using Bare Minerals for about a year and a half. I love it. It looks very natural, and feels great and lasts all day long. I am 46 and my skin is oily and scarred from acne, and I doubted it’s ability to cover marks and to not melt off during the day, but it does the trick! It’s really amazing.

I use the foundation (medium color), bisque multi-tasking minerals for extra spot concealing. glee for blush, and mineral veil for finishing. These are the basics. I have also received eye shadows and other face glimmers, but they’re extras from kits, also fine products and fun to play with. They’re brushes are very nice, too.

Application is with brushes, you sort of scrub it into your face. I know that sounds disgusting, but believe me it does not clog your pores or harm your skin in any way. My 2 older sisters with sensitive roseacea skin love it, and my 72 year old mother loves it, too. She’s the one who turned us all onto it (she’s very hip and beautiful.) I think my youngest sister is using it now, too.

Bare Minerals is kind of expensive, but you use such a small amount of the powder with each application that it lasts a long time. I buy mine through QVC.

If you try it and aren’t thrilled immediately, walk away from the mirror and go back and look after an hour. Somehow it looks better and better as the day goes on. Christina, you have got to try this. I wish you lived near me, I’d let you try mine!

I could go on and on-you’d think I was working for them! (I’m not! LOL)

  2. Sold! Cha-ching! Out of the 30 or so reviews I have read today, this was the best one! Thanks so much Gail for taking the time to tell me about your experience with Bare Minerals. I am about to need to buy new foundation, and I know what I am going to get this time! Thanks so much for reading, and again, for your excellent testimony!!!

  3. Maritza Borunda says:

As a rosacea sufferer with oily skin, it has been difficult to find foundations to help me tone down the redness without looking thick. “Bare Minerals” is awesome and the colors are very natural looking. I have light olive skin and the medium beige looks extremely natural – I get complimented on how healthy my skin looks.

So for anyone out there undecided on whether to try this product, do yourself a favor and use it. True, there is some practice involved so you can get the coverage even, but mostly it is a matter of waiting for your moisturizer to set ( 10 to 15 minutes ) before doing your makeup. That’s a small wait compared to the healthy look you get.

The only complaint I have is that the kabuki brush (small round brush that comes with the starter kit) is very delicate and started shedding after the first time I cleaned it. I used the MAC cleaning solution I use with my other brushes; next time I will just use one of those cleaning towelettes.

  4. Hi Maritza – thanks so much for your testimonial and the tips. Those will be very useful. I haven’t ordered yet, but am going to very soon. That is the first I have heard about the Kabuki brush being delicate – I will be sure to remember that, but you might think about calling them for a replacement, as I really don’t think they should do that, and think you probably have a brush that accidentally make it through quality control.
Thanks for reading, and again, for taking the time to share your experiences with me, I really appreciate it a lot!!

  7. Kim says:

    Hi all,

I must have been applying the products incorrectly because they ended up feeling heavy and un-natural looking…

    What was I doing wrong?

  8. Kim – I think you may have been using a color that wasn’t good for you, and possibly trying to overcorrect by applying way too much (and that of course won’t work). Could that be it?

    February 17, 2006

I have been dying to use Bare Minerals for the past 3 years and finally decided I am getting it! I order the starters kit on Sunday February 5, 2006 and received it on Wednesday February 15, 2006. I could not wait to start using it. That evening I got home and I marked the top of each one with little stickies so I knew what was inside each one, so I could just pick it up and get ready as quickly as possible for work the next morning. I could not believe the way I looked when I left my makeup mirror. The coverage is unbelieveable, after you use the concealer and other coverage you want to you than put on the warmth and it makes you look like you been out in the sun with such a natural glow and lastly you used the Mineral Veal and you look totally flawless and you feel like you have nothing on your face. I was skeptical at first and could not believe a powder could possibly do what they say it does but it is true, I wouldn’t trade Bare Minerals for anything in the world it is the Best makeup you can use and everyone should try it, its truly amazing. Thanks Leslie for such a wonderful product, I am getting rid of all my other makeup and replacing it with only Bare Minerals…

  10. Thanks for the testimonial Lori, I totally agree with you. Did you happen to see the funny fortune cookie fortune I got the night my bareMinerals came in?

  11. Lori Vaccaro says:

Hi Christina that is hysterical. I can’t believe that you received a fortune cookie like that the same day your bareMinerals arrived. Things happen in strange ways at times! I can’t explain to you how much I love this stuff just two days into it. I can’t believe it took me so long to finally get it it, is like no other makeup out there! The only thing I wish Leslie would do is label the top of each cap so you know exactly what is in each one of them. For instance the Mineral Veal is labeled right on the top cap, it would just make it easier for you to just pick out the one you want without looking on the bottom, that is why I stuck little stickies on each one and wrote what is in them except for the Mineral Veal…

  12. Strange for sure! I agree with you on the caps, that is a good idea. I am always fishing around trying to find the right one, I just yesterday finally moved the color that I don’t use out of the bag so that at least I am just fooling around with the ones I will eventually use. I think I will try your sticker idea.

  13. Lori Vaccaro says:

Hi Again Christina the stickers do work great. I am not a morning person and to know which ones I am going to use with setting up the proper brushes really helps me to save time. I am getting ready to leave the office now so have a great weekend and I will speak to you next week. I wish there was a way to let Leslie know that putting the info. on top of the caps would really be helpful to all of us. Take Care for now…

  14. Lady says:

I dont ever buy makeup from infomericals. I saw Bare Minerals on tv and I was intereseted. Only a few days later I went into a makeup store and saw a big set up of Bare Minerals. I picked it up and bought it. I was a little worried becuase the package was $60. But its all worth your money. Not only did I get two foundations, but two brozers as well. It also came with three brushes that I love. Bare Minerals became my faviorte thing. It really does give your face that naturaly look I have wanted. I love it, im wearing it as we speak.

  15. Shannon says:

I just tried this foundation today (I bought the Get Started Kit in Fairly Light/Light via Sephora.com) and I have mixed feelings. I have suffered from acne ever since I was a teen (I am in my early 20s now) but my skin now is mostly clear except for acne scarring, blackheads, and large pores. I don’t know exactly how many applications of the product I used, but it was a bunch because I could barely see any difference in my skin each time. I ended up using a ton of it as a concealer with the concealer brush, which worked alright. But then, about 15min after I applied the foundation, I looked in the mirror and I looked pretty amazing, if I do say so myself. So I’d say I have to agree with the posts above that say that if you wait a little while you will somehow magically look better. I did, however, apply too much because I look a little cakey and my pores are very visible. I guess I just have to practice and maybe wait a few minutes before looking in the mirror after a couple applications and not a ton. I’ll keep you updated on how this is working out for me as I experiment!

  16. Hi Shannon – you know what, I had the same experience as you. At first, I was not impressed, but when I went back to look later on, I was totally impressed. And still am. I hope you like it as much as I do! Thanks so much for leaving your comment and experience!

  17. Windy says:

Hi I am thinking of ordering bare minerals for the first time. I saw the info mercial and thought it was amazing. but I am stil kind of skeptical. I have very dark brown freckles everywhere that I would love to cover up and I have bought some pretty expensive products in the past that claim they will. they either don’t cover anyhting or they are real cakey (like merle norman) or they come off in an hour. so I guess I am just looking for some reassurance that it is worth the money and what would you recomend to buy for the coverage?

  1. [...] Ebeauty Daily has something that caught my eye this week. It a review of a product called “Bare Minerals”. Just think foundation that is dry and applied with a brush. Go read the article and you will know what I’m talking about. Anyway, I tried one of these mineral foundations and they are amazing. The first time I forgot I had applied it and then went to apply my regular foundation and then noticed that my skin didn’t look as if it needed it. It looked pretty flawless! And then I remembered that I had applied Jane Iredale Loose Powders! Just checked and I’m nearly out of the stuff. Now, thanks to Christina, I’m going to check out “Bare Minerals” too. 2. [...] Gail told me in the comments of an earlier post that if I wasn’t pleased with the look at first, to come back in an hour or two and I would like it better, and even though I liked it just fine from the start, it does look even better after it has been on your skin for a little while. One of the things I learned from the DVD is that you are to use as many applications on as you need to get the coverage you want. I use about three applications with the full coverage brush, and it is perfect – it is not “masky” at all, and there is NO line of demarcation between where the foundation ends and your skin begins. Good stuff!. [...]

  3. [...] There was an interesting article in the NYT over the weekend about how consumers (that is us) are more drawn to products with earthy benefits these days. Not the “crunch” of the 70’s per se, but more the importance of the scientific benefits of products. Leslie Blodgett attributes at least part of bareMineral’s success to “the rise of science-y ‘cosmeceuticals,’” but I have to say, I bought bareMinerals strictly from recommendations of others I respect, and I continue to buy it because it is the best foundation I have ever used. It has not a thing to do with the amount of minerals or science-y ingredients or anything else. Don’t get me wrong, I love the cosmeceutical thing, but a recommendation from a friend goes long past a good marketing plan.
