Beauty Beat: Fall Beauty Cleanup

When you get home from buying all your new gorgeous fall cosmetics, it is a good time to make a sweep through your “drawer de beaute” and clean it out. I usually do this once in the spring and once in the fall. As much as we would love to think cosmetics last forever, they just don’t. Foundation should be thrown out after 6 months, powder and powder blushes after 1 year. Lipstick will last the longest, at around 2 years, and lip gloss about a year. A good rule of thumb for all of these is, if they start to smell funky, get rid of them. Mascara is the exception, and should be thrown out regardless of how it smells, after 3 months. Bacteria and your eyes just don’t mix, so don’t take the risk, it is not worth it, and besides that, there is nothing beautiful about an eye infection!
For a little more info about shelf life, see the post from this past spring beauty cleanup. And don’t forget to come visit the Beauty Beat at Glam.com!

So, good thing I finally threw out that old eye shadow I bought, I think, back in college, aye?
(Class of ‘96). Gross, I know!
You bet, Kerri - out with the old, in with the new, girlfriend!!
Thank for the ping re: Glam Kerri! Dont ya just hate throwing out mascara after three months - feels so hard to do.
Does anyone actually really throw it out after three months? There should be someplace on the bottle where you can write the “throw out” date on it. I never remember when I got it!
I feel so nostalgic to throw out my wedding cosmetic, which is already 12 years old. Although I do not use them, but I had kept them is a safe place.
