Earlier this month, scientists gathered for the 2007 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition, and some of their findings have recently been released to the public. Why do you care, you might ask? Well, one interesting thing that came out of it was some research done by University of Kentucky (go Cats!) regarding the use of extracts of blackberries in future medical AND beauty products. The extract from the blackberries has the highest antioxidant concentration of any other fruit or nut that has been tested to date, and these antioxidants will treat things such as inflammation, cancer and the dreaded wrinkles! The extracts are currently being tested in three products – a chewing gum (which will help prevent peridontal disease), a pill (for various inflammatory diseases) and – wait for it – a skin cream, which will help with sun damaged skin and those free radicals that tear our face apart as we age. Well, the free radicals are tearing everything apart too, thats what the pill is for.
So, good news in research this month for us beauty-obsessed folks. It should be noted too that in order to reap significant benefits from blackberries, you would have to eat an absolute ton of them. But hang on, I’ll bet it won’t be too long at all before we have a whole new round of products coming at us from every direction, chock full of blackberry extract!
