Curls for Girls – Part 6 – Hold it!

Congratulations—you have curls! Left as is, these curls will last you a lot longer than curls that you would have done with none of the previous building blocks. But, for the longest lasting look, you must finish your style off with a holding spray. When deciding what to use, you should consider holding power as well as stiffness. The all time greatest holding hairspray (as someone commented on an earlier post) is Aqua Net. That stuff will hold your hair until the end of time, but with the side effect of leaving your hair feeling like it has been dipped in lacquer and dried (and some very icky side effects, but that is for another time). This is the extreme end of hair sprays. If this is what you want, then go for it, but there are other options!

If your hair falls the minute you step outdoors, look for a spray that contains humectants, which will repel the moisture in the air. If you don’t need that much hold (which you should not after following the preliminary steps!), and you like a softer feel-as well as the ability to brush through it – use a styling spray. Only if you have the most difficult hair to hold should you need a firm hold spray. One with medium hold should work just fine. Be sure and lightly lift your curls and spray underneath a little bit, or spray with your head upside down.

I think one important thing to remember is that there are many, many different products available for your hair. Some will work well for you, and some won’t. Always try something else because there IS a product out there that will do what you are looking for. Also, product recommendations from people who have a different hair type than you are rather worthless, which is why I hesitate to recommend specific ones. Take recommendations from people who have similar hair types to you and you will be able to purchase with a bit more confidence.

I would love to hear which hair sprays that you like to use, and what hair type you have, please feel free to leave a comment! :-)

I love curling my hair !! I hardly ever straighten my hair but anyway. I have really fine asian hair and surprisingly not stubbornly straight. I mean, it’s naturally straight but not so bad that it wouldn’t curl. I usually use the Herbal Essence Body Envy. I’ve used Aqua Net and yes, I did get that dry result and it held really good but nonetheless very dry. The holding came in handy though because the hairstyle was for a wedding. For my everyday use though the Herbal Essence holds pretty well for my hair and actually smells really great. My boyfriend loves the smell of it! It also adds a little volume which is great because my hair is thin. It also doesn’t make your hair too hard, makes it look very light, not like you put a whole bunch of products in your hair. I recommend it to my friends and they love it too! =)

  1. [...] Pho Finish Hair SprayBy Christina Jones | Related entries in Hair Care, Product Reviews As you may or may not have noticed in my Curly Girls series last month, I have not had a hair spray that really wet my whistle in a long time. They are either too heavy, too sticky, too stiff, don’t hold, smell horrid and who knows what else. Over the weekend I had an opportunity to try a hairspray that was new to me, Pho Finish, by Cibu International. This is what Cibu says about the spray: Features: · Bamboo extracts, which add strength and resiliance · Extracts of Lotus flower, a long-living botanical which revtalizes hair · Water Lily extracts, which refresh and soothe hair · Hygroscopic substances add optimal moisture · Vitamin B5 to stimulate and soothe · Classic Dark Flowers Fragrance of spice and vanilla tones [...]
