I try to make it something pampering, a cosmetics, perfume or special bath treat. And in better economic times I always send friends a new year gift too. It always throws people off guard, I always send something I know they wouldn't splurge on for themselves. I think there is some good luck thing about making sure the first dollar you spend in a new year being for something for yourself, close out the transaction and then pay for household stuff or stuff for other people, but you must buy yourself something in the new year first.
