Nail Polish Myths

Learn how to do your own salon quality nails!

I was just reading an article about how to perfectly polish your nails, and there were a few commonly held mistruths in it that I thought I would address while it is on my mind.

  • 1. You should let your nails go without polish so they can “breathe.” Wrong. Your nails are made of dead cells, they do not breathe in any form or fashion. There truly is no need to remove polish, or artificial nails ever for this reason.
  • 2. Nails will turn yellow because you wear polish too much. Wrong again. Your nails yellow because you are either not wearing a basecoat, or wearing a very bad one. If you are wearing a basecoat and your nails yellow, try a different brand. In the meantime, use a very lightly abrasive buffer to remove the yellowing.
  • 3. Let your polish dry between coats. Guess what? Wrong. Polish is meant to be applied right on top of the prior coat, and then let the whole thing dry well. The coats of polish will chemically bond together rather than be 4 independant coats of polish, and be much stronger and less likely to chip.

Check THIS out for myth-busting! I just experimented with a few of my nail polishes… I sacrificed about four of them, with mixed results, but OH THE RESULTS. I can’t believe this, and how good it is. I added jojoba oil to a few pinkish, shimmer-beige, clearish shades, and it’s incredible as a treatment. It dries TOUGH, stays tough, and seems to be healing the nails. I’m afraid to make a big announcement until I do a lot more experimentation, but you are the first to know: I added jojoba oil (about 1/10th to 1/12th in proportion to the bottle) to my own blend of milky-shimmery pink (In The Buff plus Blushing Bride plus some Maybelline Express) and I got this ultra-tough nail treatment stuff.

It makes my nails suddenly look and feel SO MUCH HEALTHIER. But my poor brain is trying to wrap itself around OMG IT’S OIL it’s oil IT’S OIL it’s oil IT’S OIL! STOP THAT! It’s OIL! OMG! OIL!

Yes, it’s oil. And I put it in my nail polish. And my nail polish… well, the bottles that didn’t get lumpy and gunky and sparkly-pudding-looking, that’s about 50%… IS BETTER, like a new product, so much better than those other “conditioning treatment” formulas.

I am a genius. So far. Stay tuned, we’ll see.
