I was lucky enough to get to spend the entire first week of November as an invited guest at the Langham Hotel in Pasadena, and passed just about the entirety of my stay being absolutely indulgent and gluttonous.

It was fab.

During my stay, I stopped by Ajne. Created and owned by Jane Hendler, Ajne is a Carmel based company that emphasizes the use of organic, chemical-free products and CUSTOM BLENDS (how cool is that???) perfumes with ingredients that are so rare, they can cost up to $80,000 a kilo.

These perfumes are either sold stand-alone, or expertly blended to create new scents that can provide different benefits based on your personal needs. The personal blend is done by a process that seems half chemistry, half sorcery: Ajne uses a system, based on the ideas of Chakra, to make each scent unique to the wearer. First, you have to answer a questionnaire about yourself that might seem a little off-the-topic for perfume (for example, what colors do you like or what your favorite season is). Then a mélanger trained by Ajne will interpret your answers and decide which areas of your body’s chakra need improving. Since these areas relate to scents, it is then easy to find which oils and perfumes you will like and benefit from the most.

The process may be a little confusing for those who don’t understand Chakra, but the result is absolutely delicious – by the end of my experience, I learned that while I as full of love, there was not enough passion in my life – and that was where my chakras were unbalanced. My scent helped to get my insides in order…and also smelled fabulous.

I am learning a little more about fragrance all of the time, it is nothing like I really thought it was. I thought you put it on and you liked it or you didn’t, and then you wore the one you liked. Forever. LOL Do they have fragrance classes like they do for wines? I think they should, I would love to take one. Through all of my fragrance freedom this last six months I have learned a bit about what I like, and maybe even enough to actually choose a fragrance from its description. Do you think that can be done? Heck, what do I know.

Ajne is launching a boutique inside of Henri Bendel’s department store on July 6th, and what a magnificent “candy store” of fragrance this appears to be. Candy store is a repulsive description, as this is really more of a Mercedes dealership. About Anje, from their web site:

Ajne’s customized fragrances are based solely on an individual’s personality and natural skin chemistry. Ajne has designed a proprietary computer analysis system that accesses a database of over 2,000 ingredient combinations and more than 200 pure and natural components. After completing the computer analysis, Hendler (or one of her skilled staff) personally interviews each client to obtain additional insights. Next, the client is invited to sample various rare and precious naturals from around the world to begin to assess scent preferences. Then, Hendler develops a fabulous multi-faceted parfum or eau de parfum by adding or subtracting from the parfumerie’s extensive collection of complex prêt-a-porter or ready-to-wear bases.

Custom, or Couture, fragrances start at $500, while the ready-to-wear fragrances are a good bit less. I think after looking thoroughly and lusting after all of these fragrances, that this one would be the one for me:

Maternité Rosé

Floral, citrus, boisé

Maternité Rosé (Rose of Motherhood) is an oil based blend that celebrates the beauty of motherhood and joy of creating a new Life. Maternité is a subtle floral, citrus and wood blend of precious oils specifically known to support the birth process including Mandarin, Bulgarian rose, Sandalwood and Rosewood. During pregnancy, the mother’s senses are heightened in order to protect the unborn child. To enhance its therapeutic benefits, it is blended in pure jojoba oil or aloe vera gel. They help support a healthy mind and spirit in mother and child.

The ingredients in Maternité are known to strengthen and balance the Heart Chakra. They are also known to support the birthing process and the nervous system.

I know, I know – I am done birthing babies. Darn it (I love babies!). But, I still think this is the one for me. I someday will get to Ajne and see if I was right.
