Hello from Macau: Brow Browsing

Before I left for China, I was very concerned about my grooming – we all know that some of the most innovative beauty and skincare finds come from Asia…as the beauty editor of our tour group, I didn’t want to not do my profession proud.

As I arrived, I realized I had been correct to be worried – the women of Macau are impeccably groomed. And it is a little intimidating.

I’ll have fabulous pix upon my return to the States next week, but for now, I wanted to chat a bit about one thing have noticed: The women of Macau have fabulously shaped brows. The trend here seems to veer toward the lightly-groomed (but carefully thought out to anyone who knows) look that I was wild about on the Thakoon runway this season.

I am impressed: Brows say everything. We know that they are the frame for our face, and bad brows pretty much undo any and all other work we do for our appearance. If you go too bushy, you look sloppy, and overplucking makes you look drawn and sickly. Or just angry. (You’ll see what I mean, ever see those really skinny brows on our grandmas? It’s like a permanent dour expression!)

And that is why the Macanese women embracing the lightly groomed look makes me happy.

Allure Backstage: Hottest Beauty Trends

HairZing Demo and Review

I spend my whole life growing out my hair, I think. I love to wear it short and I love it long, so I am always transitioning to one style or another. So, I am growing out now, from this, which was my spring ‘do, to – well, I don’t quite know yet. I have been lusting lately over Gene Simmon’s wife, Shannon Tweed’s, hair – it really is gorgeous – see (and, ahem, Gene isn’t looking so bad after all that surgery either, eh?)? I always cut it off before it makes it that long though. Impatient.
So, I have discovered this wonderful hair *doo dad* – called the HairZing. I was sent a press release about it a while back and took a peek, and was pretty intrigued, but I recently got my hot little hands on one, and WOW. I really do love it. This is the ultimate gorgeous tool for whipping your hair up in the hot TX summer. It is dressy, it is casual – really its just as cute as it can be, and super easy to use. I have a drawer full of doo dads that are NOT so easy to use. Are you like me?

So here is a little clip of me putting it in – I think you can see how pretty it is and how easy it is to put in and truly make an elegant style. Not saying that this particular style is so elegant, it needs a little work, but you can see the HairZing in action at any rate.

The HairZing is available in a ton of different colors, you can see them on the site here. They come in several different sizes as well, so poke around over there for a few minutes and see what they have. The one I have was $12.50, and the most expensive one I saw while poking around at their site was $13.95.

The quality is fantastic – the material they use to string the beads on between the combs (which are on each side, and are made of metal wire), is a super stretchy plastic – not pinchy elastic – think thick stretchy fishing wire. I have given it some pretty rigorous stretch testing, and its all good. The way you stretch it when you put it in makes it stay in so very well – truly, all day – it won’t budge a bit. I love this, and I am ordering a bunch more right away. And if you are the socially responsible type, which I hope you are, don’t miss their company story. Elle’s Top 5 Self Tanners

Sadly, I haven’t tried most of these yet (with the exception of the Dove Energy Glow, which is GREAT), but am so pleased with my GlowFusion spray tanner, I just can’t bear to go back to lotions and worrying about scrubbing my hands without getting the lotion off the top of my hands (not a big deal with the Dove). But I realize that not everyone is so obsessed with spray tanning, and isn’t going to run out to buy a $175 tanner (is that crazy?), so here is a very useful list from the June issue

Beauty Beat: Silver Spring

Silver is smoking hot for the spring! You can have lots of fun with silver in your makeup kit without spending a fortune. Try a new silver nail polish, eye shadow, eyeliner or even lipstick to take part. The key to looking up to date without looking like a tin can is subtlety. Try a gorgeous silvery smoky eye with a more subtle lip color. Polish your nails with a silver polish and dab just a touch of silver eye shadow on the center of your lower lip for a pouty and up to date look without overdoing it. Also, silver is much more suited to cool skin tones – if you have a skin tone on the warmer side, try accenting with gold – you will accomplish the same great metallic look, and you will look radiant, rather than six feet under.

Great Microdermabrasion from Skin Nutrition with Phytomins Refining Face Polish

Just like the skin care gadgets, I am always on the hunt for great microdermabrasion-type of products. I have a feeling if I actually went and got a microdermabrasion treatment at the dermatologist, I would be in for a much different treatment, but so far I am good, and the home products suit me fine. What makes a good microdermabrasion cream, to me, are the texture and the density of the grains that abrade your face – I like them very fine and very plentiful. If there are too few and they are too big, I categorize it as more of a classic exfoliator – does that make sense? To me an exfoliator is more creamy and less grainy than a microdermabrasion cream.

This is the Skin Nutrition with Phytomins Refining Face Polish. It is a balance between a microdermabrasion cream and an exfoliator, leaning more towards microdermabrasion. The grains are very fine, which I love, and they are suspended in a sort of a combination between a gel and a cream, with a scent that is very vaguely citrus, not unpleasantly citrus at all (not a big fan of citrus). When you are done, you feel like you have had a good scrubbing, which is absolutely the important part, eh? Here is what they say:

I guess the Vitamin C is what I feel smells slightly citrus-y.
