Before I left for China, I was very concerned about my grooming – we all know that some of the most innovative beauty and skincare finds come from Asia…as the beauty editor of our tour group, I didn’t want to not do my profession proud.

As I arrived, I realized I had been correct to be worried – the women of Macau are impeccably groomed. And it is a little intimidating.

I’ll have fabulous pix upon my return to the States next week, but for now, I wanted to chat a bit about one thing have noticed: The women of Macau have fabulously shaped brows. The trend here seems to veer toward the lightly-groomed (but carefully thought out to anyone who knows) look that I was wild about on the Thakoon runway this season.

I am impressed: Brows say everything. We know that they are the frame for our face, and bad brows pretty much undo any and all other work we do for our appearance. If you go too bushy, you look sloppy, and overplucking makes you look drawn and sickly. Or just angry. (You’ll see what I mean, ever see those really skinny brows on our grandmas? It’s like a permanent dour expression!)

And that is why the Macanese women embracing the lightly groomed look makes me happy.

See what I mean? Check out a video from Macau TV – look at the host’s fabulous brows!

Now, if you’ll excuse me: I’m about to go shopping in town…and need to put on some makeup first!

I realized, then, that for some reason, it is only done and appreciated by a niche of us – and I wanted to remedy that, because it’s a great option for so so many people who are interested in hair removal.

Sxc.hu

Threading is an ancient form of hair removal that is just now getting more popular in West Culture that basically yanks hair out from the root using a single piece of thread. You mostly see it used on the face, especially the brows, but you can technically use it anywhere.

The threader will hold one end of the cotton thread in his or her teeth and the other in the left hand, then the middle is looped through the index and middle fingers of the right hand, and they will use the loop to trap the hairs they want to remove and pull them out. If done right, it doesn’t even hurt!

Why I like it: It hurts less than plucking. And – as I have sensitive skin – I’m less likely to get red after! Plus, the results seem to last a little longer, and grow in better! (Well, usually, depending on where you get it done.)

PS: If you do go for threading, and in NY – go to Shobha. I swear by them!

This set includes pretty much everything you need to up the smolder-level of your sultry stare, from brow gels to primers to everything in between, including:
- 0.02 oz Sephora Electro Liner Copper
- 0.017 oz Anastasia Brow Gel
- 0.095 oz Anastasia Matte Highlighter
- 0.1 oz Urban Decay Primer Potion
- 0.11 oz Too Faced Shadow Insurance
- 1.7 oz Lancome Bi-Facil Makeup Remover
- 0.25 oz Cosmedicine Opti-mologist Eye Cream
- 0.005 oz Smashbox Mini Cream Eye Liner Palette
- 0.14 oz Stila Mini Smudge Pot
- 0.06 oz Smashbox Mini Eyeshadow Trio in Head Shot

They are all “minis” – which I actually like better. It’s the ideal way to try a product before you commit to a full size. And, at $40 (a $112 value) – how can I not take advantage??? Note: Just so you know, Anastasia Brow Gel is my favorite product ever, and that alone usually runs for around $20 – so this is a crazy deal!

My favorite brow guru, Elke Von Freudenberg, actually sets up shop (half the time) at Slope Suds, right near me in Park Slope, Brooklyn. (She splits her time between NY and LA.)

I spoke to her this weekend and asked if she could share some tips with us on achieving the perfect brow, and she had some great ones!

1. When tweezing brows, hold the tip or slant of the tweezer against the skin the whole time as you tweeze going in the direction of hair growth. By keeping the tweezer against the skin, you keep away the ouch factor.
2. Avoid applying brow makeup first and going by that to tweeze and design a shape for you brows. You may be tweezing hairs that you actually need to keep the shape you want.
3. Keep that highlighter brow or shadow handy. It keeps those little hairs that you haven’t yet tweezed hidden by bouncing light away from the skin.
4. Your brows should start between the bridge of your nose and your tear duct. Check to see how much space you have between your brows and it’s better to keep the space smaller than larger. Too large a space between your brows actually makes your nose look bigger.
5. Keep the arch of your brow right above the outside edge of the iris of your eye. Any further out and your eyes can look cross eyed, specially in photos.
6. Grooming above the brows is fine, as long as you’re grooming hairs that are on the forehead. Any hair that is in the brow itself can distort and remove the arch of the brow.
7. Keep tweezing and waxing hairs at the ends of the brows at a minimum. Hairs here are the first to stop growing and the hardest to grow back in.
8. Avoid applying any heavy or oily products to your brows after you’ve waxed or tweezed. You’ll prevent those tiny red bumps or breakouts from happening that way.
9. To keep away the ouch. hold the skin down on the area you’re tweezing. it’s the skin moving that hurts, not the hair.

My best friend’s guy has been known to get his brows threaded before every special occasion so that they are perfectly shaped, and my baby-faced little brother will never go to bed before well-moisturizing from his toes to the tips of his fingers.

When is it too much? And when is it just…good manners?

The truth is, male grooming is sometimes just good manners: Neanderthal man is long gone, the time when male body odor was the only fragrance required is only valid in the wild (and among my puppies).

Men have evolved, and as brows are known to frame the face, keeping them in order is more important than just about anything they may wear on their body.

The interesting thing is that brows are ONLY noticeable when they are a mess, and if your guy has a monobrow or just a few stray hairs, it may be a good time to summon his inner metro.
