Who says you have to spend hours in front of the mirror making hair look perfect. This year’s hottest looks, such as the beehive and bob are over, so let hair go in 2009 for a sexy, fun, “I just threw myself together,” look.

Oh no, my hair just naturally looks this good!

Style hair as usual and when finished, flip hair upside down and shake it up. First apply a drop of P2 Hair Honey hair-molding product. Next shake and scrunch hair. Flip right side up and lightly finger thru to calm down ends. Be careful not to make it too perfect!

Night out on the town

Randomly grab sections of dry hair and mist with P2 RefresHair, a light flexible setting spray. Twist each section down to the scalp and clip with a Bobbi pin. The bigger the section the bigger the wave, and let dry while you apply some sexy evening makeup. After dry, simply un-twist each section, finger thru and spray again. Hair curl pattern should be uneven and soft.

Messy Updo

Easily done with the right tools, first apply a hair-refreshing product to the entire head then lightly back-comb the whole head with a wide-tooth comb. Next apply a few silicone shine drops, rub hands together and smooth. Sweep hair up into a loose twist or ponytail and secure with a few pins. Spray on a light holding spray to finish. Try P2 RefresHair and P2 Fluid Spray.

According to Asha SalonSpa, the largest Aveda Lifestyle SalonSpa in Chicago, this year’s trend for holiday hair is a casual look with a loose, soft appeal. Gwen Liska from Asha SalonSpa says: “Guests are coming to Asha to recreate the looks seen by today’s Hollywood elite, and they realize that these looks are easy to replicate themselves to look just as glamorous.”

Asha Salon Spa’s expert stylist, Gwen Liska, divulges the secrets to readers of how to create the look that will be sure to have people talking at upcoming holiday parties.

The New and Improved Bun

Brush your hair and part it the way you prefer. Take all of your hair back and tie with a rubber band in a low pony tail at the nape of your neck. Next grab the pony tail and twist around the rubber band. When fringe comes out of the pony tail, take a few bobby pins and pin your hair around the base of the rubber band leaving and inch or so of straight hair to create a sassy new look of the original bun.

For a twist on this look instead of having your hair perfectly centered you can do this on the lower left or right side of your head.

Curls Amore

Pull your hair back into a low or high ponytail, whichever you prefer, and take a thick curling iron to make big curls. Then take each curl and tease it closely to the root and bobby pin it tightly into the rubber band creating a voluptuous amount of curls in a confined section on your head.

The Faux Hawk

Part your hair from left arch of your eyebrow all the way to the back of your head then do the same on the right side creating a railroad track look, then take thick sections of the middle from the front to the back and tease. Comb each of these sections toward the back of the head to create a dramatic “poof” with lots of volume worn by stars such as Hillary Duff.

For a twist on this look you could take all of the hair and put that in a high pony tail creating volume as well as height.

VaVa Volume

Take sections of your hair and hairspray them from root to end. Use a thick curling iron and tightly curl your whole head. Individually pin each curl to your head with a bobby pin.

Allow time for the hair to cool and leave the pins in while you continue getting ready for the big night. This will set the curls into formation. Once you remove the pins, turn your head upside down and hairspray your hair to create a glamorous look of thick, voluminous curls.

For a twist on this hairstyle, casually pin one side of your hair with a shiny barrette, or a fancy bobby pin to create a more dramatic look. For a sweeping look do the same steps above, but instead loosely grab your hair into a pony tail, and make sure to leave pieces of your hair out to create a romantic, beautiful look.

• Brushing wet hair is a big no-no.
However, there is one brush that you can actually use that won’t damage wet hair: Olivia Garden’s Ceramic + Ion XL Pro. Featuring a soft ionic cushion and ion charged bristles with comfortable ball point tips, the XL PRO is ideal for detangling wet hair.

• Limp locks got you down?
Use a large vented oval brush. This has a ceramic-coated barrel and snag-free neck ring so hair won’t tangle when styling. It also helps restore hair’s balance and adds luster and sheen, while smoothing it out.

• Need to fight frizzy hair and add a little oomph?
A Ceramic + Ion Tourmaline Thermal Brush creates voluminous, soft curls when blow drying. With consistent strides of the brush, you’ll have texture and movement instantly. Ideal for long hair.

• Craving sleek, pin-straight locks one day and luscious waves the next?
You’ll find just what you need with Eco-Friendly Bamboo Styling Brushes. The unique thermal ceramic and ionic brush acts as a hot roller to create curls while the boar brush achieves a smooth, straight look. They also feature anti-static and anti-bacterial qualities, as well as an ergonomic, lightweight design.

If you are too busy (or just don’t want) to wash your hair every single day, dry shampoo powders are a quick, easy alternative.

One of the best that I’ve ever used is Shampowder by Buttercream Cosmetics. I tried it out early this year and it works great. It has a built-in brush applicator, so you can apply the powder exactly where you want it.

Though I don’t use it often, Shampowder is terrific for hair emergencies. It has light vanilla scent and leaves your hair looking (and feeeling) more manageable. You dab the powder along your hairline and it absorbs the excess oils in you hair, leaving it looking much cleaner.

The pigmented powder now comes in three shades for black hair, dark and red hair, and light hair. The black shade is the latest of three and was just recently released.

You can order Shampowder from Buttercream Cosmetics for just $15.99.

Derivatives of the active ingredient in Lumigan, a glaucoma drug that has a beautiful side effect – lengthening of your lashes – have been showing up over the last couple of years in the beauty trade, most notably in Jan Marini’s Age Intervention Eyelash. The FDA became concerned about the non-prescription use of this prescription drug and embargoed the supply last year, and seized more of the old supply this week. Also there are several products with a derivative of Lumigan in some relatively expensive products, that have been among those named in a lawsuit earlier this month from Allergan, the makers of Lumigan:

Jan Marini’s Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner ($160) (a new product made in response to the embargo of the Age Intervention Eyelash last year)

Athena Cosmetics RevitaLash ($150)

PhotoMedex’s MD Lash Factor ($140)

This is the eyelash product that I use on occasion, and the company claims that it is not made from the same product, but the closest I can get to the ingredient is “Eyelash Growth Promoter Complex”:

DermaLash from DermaQuest ($90)

These types of products will most likely not cause permanent change, meaning that you will have to keep using them to keep reaping the benefits, and you should be able to use them on your eyebrows if yours are sparse. I have honestly been too willy-nilly, and too skeptical to keep using them for a long period of time, so I don’t have a great testimony to offer you, but I think I will give my DermaLash a better try now and see what happens.

Now, should you want to try Lumigan itself on your lashes, there is no law barring your doctor from prescribing it to you, as once a prescription drug is approved by the FDA, it can be prescribed for anything. The trick is finding a doctor who will do it. I would love to hear from any of you who are doing this. Is it easy to get doctors to prescribe this for you? Have you found one who won’t? What are their concerns with using Lumigan without glaucoma?

I spend my whole life growing out my hair, I think. I love to wear it short and I love it long, so I am always transitioning to one style or another. So, I am growing out now, from this, which was my spring ‘do, to – well, I don’t quite know yet. I have been lusting lately over Gene Simmon’s wife, Shannon Tweed’s, hair – it really is gorgeous – see (and, ahem, Gene isn’t looking so bad after all that surgery either, eh?)? I always cut it off before it makes it that long though. Impatient.
So, I have discovered this wonderful hair *doo dad* – called the HairZing. I was sent a press release about it a while back and took a peek, and was pretty intrigued, but I recently got my hot little hands on one, and WOW. I really do love it. This is the ultimate gorgeous tool for whipping your hair up in the hot TX summer. It is dressy, it is casual – really its just as cute as it can be, and super easy to use. I have a drawer full of doo dads that are NOT so easy to use. Are you like me?

So here is a little clip of me putting it in – I think you can see how pretty it is and how easy it is to put in and truly make an elegant style. Not saying that this particular style is so elegant, it needs a little work, but you can see the HairZing in action at any rate.

The HairZing is available in a ton of different colors, you can see them on the site here. They come in several different sizes as well, so poke around over there for a few minutes and see what they have. The one I have was $12.50, and the most expensive one I saw while poking around at their site was $13.95.

The quality is fantastic – the material they use to string the beads on between the combs (which are on each side, and are made of metal wire), is a super stretchy plastic – not pinchy elastic – think thick stretchy fishing wire. I have given it some pretty rigorous stretch testing, and its all good. The way you stretch it when you put it in makes it stay in so very well – truly, all day – it won’t budge a bit. I love this, and I am ordering a bunch more right away. And if you are the socially responsible type, which I hope you are, don’t miss their company story. They are nice folks and all about taking care of people and giving them a leg up in the world. Good stuff. Let me know if you try these out and how much you love them, ok?

A general rule of thumb – the finer your hair, the less product you can use.

3. Use a great brush – boars bristle brushes will give you shine, nylon brushes will give you control.

4. Pay attention to how you place your hair while its cooling. If you remember way back when I talked about sulfur and hydrogen bonds, you can put that info to use and have longer lasting, gorgeous hairstyles simply from a blow dry.

I also totally agree with Adir about the Ionic Tourmaline Ceramic blow dryer – much healthier for the hair, both from the way it treats your hair, to cutting drying time nearly in half. Happy blowdrying!

I’m sorry, I have never been a fan. Never seen what the rest of the world has seen in her. I certainly have seen her look beautiful, but most of the time, I just really don’t see it. Even when she first came on the scene – I was never into that waif thing at all. I am sure I’ll get slammed, ’cause I have never knows anyone stay on top like she has, despite all her horrific press. She must have an enormous and dedicated fan base, it just isn’t me. And probably about 10 angels watching over her. Bless her heart.

Kate is in talks with her friend and hairdresser James Brown (no, not the <strike>dead guy</strike> musician) to start a new line of hair care products. [source] Interestingly enough, the line will feature her image, not her name. I am not sure why. Do they not want to be associated with her name? Not bloody likely. Does she not want to too closely associate with the product line? I can’t imagine, especially after seeing her name splashed all over her recent clothing line. Questions questions. I guess, since they are still in talks, it remains to be seen.

On a related note, Kate is plummetting down in this picture like I am into being that gray rooted woman I can’t stand seeing. This is just about what my hair looks like now. Still. haven’t. colored. Oy.
