As I’m sure you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Hundreds of companies produce and designate “pink” products with a portion of sales going back to breast cancer related charities such as the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and many others.

You might be surprised that some of the products that you use regularly are part of the promotion. For example, here are three of my personal favorites that are giving back.

Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion
I have used this product for over a dozen years. This lipstick is the product of emerging designer Thakoon, and was featured at his Fall 2008 show. Thakoon envisioned a young, modern Japanese woman who leaves her life behind and escapes to Hawaii. Once there, she loses herself in the surf and sun. Not a bad vision, eh? I can’t help but remember Claire’s funny story about her Proenza Pink. This looks to be a MUCH more wearable color. But get it before you have to spend $75 bucks on it, ok?

And stay tuned for my Fashion Week story about Lancôme. I had an absolute blast at the Lancôme boutique in NYC, and have a renewed love for Lancôme (and especially their L.U.C.I. collection!). But I will still never,ever shop Lancôme in College Station again. Thank God for the internets (again).

Laura Kinney from Sephora offers these tips for kissable Valentine lips:

Make lips more pouty with an overnight treatment. LipFusion XL, available at Sephora, works while you’re sleeping to plump lips. It uses microscopic spheres to penetrate the skin and deliver collagen and hyaluronic acid below the surface.

Wear a lip mask while you’re doing your hair. Too Faced Intensive Plumping Lip Mask (at Sephora) dramatically plumps your entire lip — the pillow and the perimeter.

Add flavor. For your special date, swap your normal gloss for one that’s spiked with flavor to make your kisses even yummier.

The hot look for red lips this season is stained and smudged, almost as if you’ve been sucking on a cherry Popsicle. To achieve this look: Prep your lips with balm, and use your fingers to rub on a tiny bit of red lipstick, concentrating the color in the center of the lip and blending outward.

If you have dry lips, stay away from matte finishes. Use these only if lips are supple and moisturized.

Always prep lips with a primer or balm before applying lipstick. This fills in fine lines and clears away flakes so the color goes on smoothly.

I take issue with this: If you put lip balm on your lips just prior to your lipstick, you will lose any hope of long lasting lipstick. I say use lip balm all other times, then you won’t have to worry about it! My favorite lip balm is from BeautiControl, if you can find a rep in your area. Satin Lips from Mary Kay is great too, and Kelly from our own Thrifty Mommy is a Mary Kay rep-if you’re interested in trying it, give her a shout!

By the way, my very favorite lipsticks are the long lasting Lipfinity lipsticks by Max Factor (picture linked to drugstore.com). Some of the very light colors don’t last quite as long as the others, but the rest last forever – in fact they often are still coloring my lips the next day if I don’t specifically take them off. One of the best things about them is that once they are on, you can use lip balm OVER them. Works great! Each lipstick comes with a lipgloss as well. I have these in every color they make for cool skin tones, and often buy several if I fall really in love with a color.
