Anna revealed that she’s a fan of The Body Shop’s lip and cheek tint. I then mentioned that I had used the lip tint as a cheek tint; one of my old guerilla makeup techniques. I’ve learned to do these sort of things due to frugality in terms of procuring makeup and such.

The photo is about a couple of years old (taken in Australia; November 2005) and you can barely see the “tint” (skin being so tanned and all) however, if you view it large, you’ll get a better picture. You’ll see that my cheeks are quite flushed and very much looking “naturally” rosy. I love how my skin has this “natural” glow.

What about you ladies? Do you have your own personal “guerilla” makeup technique? DO share! We’d love to explore new ways on how to do our makeup.

And applying on single eyelids can even be trickier. There have been friends who have come up to me and ask for tips on how to apply eye makeup for single eyelids. I have to admit, I had found it hard to explain how to apply the sort of makeup that will highlight the beauty of such eyes and mask its imperfections.

Receding eyes tend to be on the puffy side, too. So, picking out eye shadows on the reddish-brown shades are almost a must-have. It’s dark enough to create a deeper look and mask the puffiness. However, one should be careful not to choose really dark eye shadows cuz these tend to make the eyes even smaller. It’s really advisable to go for ones on the brown shade that’s not too dark and avoid black eye shadows.

<ins>Application</ins>: Trace a line across the upper eyelid. Trick is to blend upward and outward.

Of course, I know most of you would want to venture into colours on occasion. You’ll be surprised with just how many shades you can actually use. If you want to be a little adventurous, one thing I’ve discovered is trying the ruby red eye shadow that’s a definite eye-catcher.

<ins>Application</ins>: Simply apply a soft red line across your upper eyelid. No blending required cuz it’s the line that you want. Note that you shouldn’t apply red over the entire upper eyelid or below the eyes.

For puffy eyelids, drop the frosted or glittery eye shadows. Perhaps you can experiment on one with a slight shimmer but that’s it. Reason is cuz it’ll only put emphasis on eyelids. What we are trying to achieve is to tone it down, yea?

Then comes the highlighting part. We want to create a bit of depth by focusing on the brow bone area. A pale eye shadow or white can do the job. Apply the eye shadow from the arch of your eyebrow, along the brow bone, outwards. This will highlight that area, leaving the lid with darker eye shadow looking deeper than it really is.

For a finishing touch, apply mascara on the lower lashes first cuz it’s easier then apply several coats to achieve a thicker lash. Use a lash curler to create a more lengthier lash. Thick lashes help make eyes look wider.

There you go. I hope these simple tips on eye makeup application can help you out. If I manage to do this on one of my friends again, I’ll make sure to take some photos and show you.

If you have more tips to share, feel free to let us know. I’m sure Beauty Bento Box readers will definitely appreciate them!

Since I already briefly told you about the process that’s involved in the application, not to mention, the useful video included in the previous post, this time I’d like you to take a look at the Japanese makeup and tools you can use. Note that these are similar to or the actual makeup and tools used by Geiko (Geisha) or Kabuki actors.

Base and Prep

<ins>Japanese Geisha Maiko SHIRO-NURI Pro Kabuki Abura</ins>

This is the oil undercoat for use with the ‘Kabuki Oshiroi’ Shiro-Nuri (Doran) face paint. It is softened in the hands and then rubbed over the entire face or other areas to prepare the skin for the white face makeup.

<ins>Japanese Geisha Maiko SHIRO-NURI Pro Ishineri Hair Wax</ins>

This is the stiff wax used to flatten out facial hair such as the eyebrows prior applying the Kabuki Abrua, exactly the same as ‘Taihaku’. It is softened between the fingers and rubbed over facial hair. After applying the complete Shiro-Nuri makeup over this, you may then draw new ones with Stage Liner or Lining Colour #1 Black & #4C Red.

This is the Shiro-Nuri (Doran) white face paint. It is diluted in a dish of water and then painted on over the entire face, neck or other areas with a #60 Itahake, smoothing it out and removing excess water with a Sponge Pad.
I’m somewhat certain that I got you all excited and are now wondering where you can actually get these makeup and tools. Well, bad news is that, as far as I know, there are no stores that offer them. Good news is that they’re available online. I’ve been searching and earlier I finally found them over at Hannari-Ya, an eBay power seller.

If you’re looking into trying out the Geisha look, Hannari-Ya also offers a Geisha or Kabuki Real Pro White Makeup Set for US$225. See the image below for product inclusions.

Here’s an invite to all you beauties in Manila, courtesy of Beauty and Minerals. This is the third time I’ve received an invite and probably the second time I’ll be attending this event. Sophie of Beautynomics, Kikay Kits and Beauty Gizmo will be doing a makeup application demonstration, showing four great eye makeup looks that’s hot for this season.
Beauty and Minerals will also be launching their Eye makeup special, Monave Sultries.
If you want to learn more about mineral makeup, I suggest that you go. If you’re attending, let me know. I’d love to meet you.

Did you see how she just focused on eye makeup? Applying that liquid eyeliner and mascara did wonders to the look. The makeup merely made her look fresh and not overly made up. Very natural, indeed!
Remember the first tip — Cleanse, tone and moisturise!
Concealer application tip: Use the ring finger and apply the concealer lightly and in a rolling motion.
Rule of thumb for eyebrows: three shades lighter than your hair colour.
Let me know if you get around to applying this tutorial.

Meet Eena, she was my model during the styling project I did for a segment on national TV. I did her makeup that day, alongside styling and what-not.
She has chinita or almond shaped eyes, no eyelid creases, extremely thin set of eyebrows, great set of cheekbones and luscious lips. Her golden skin is something that I’m used to since I share the same skin tone.

However, if there’s something I’m used to, it’s Asian skin and features.

Since, we’re simply going for a more natural looking makeup on her since the segment should capture a girl-next-door type and we’re not expecting too much halogen lights during the shoot. I went with doing up her eyes for expression, and cheeks and lips for colour.

<ins>What I used</ins>:

Face
J & J Daycream Moisturiser
Tea Tree Oil Tube Concealer #02, The Body Shop
Claire Foundation, Monave
Satin Sun Illuminizer, Valerie

Eyes
Shimmer Waves, The Body Shop
Bombshell Multi-purpose Mineral, Valerie
Eye Definer in Taupe, The Body Shop
Volum Express Mascara in Brownish Black, Maybelline

Cheek
Cheek Colour, The Body Shop

Lips
Shimmer Lip Balm in Cranberry, The Body Shop
189 Pure Eden, Estee Lauder

If you’ve noticed, I mixed using conventional makeup and minerals (it’s one tip I got from Sophie) on Eena. I’m still in transition when it comes to mineral makeup. One thing I can vouch for when it comes to using the latter is that it does stand the test of time. It doesn’t wear off easily, take a look at Eena’s top photo, that’s her makeup (with little to no re-touch) approximately after eight hours of humidity and perspiration.

For Eyes, I’m known to do several layers to achieve shadows. The best tool for application I would suggest is the use of fingertips. For cheeks, I concentrate on the “apples” and simply the blend colour around it. For Lips, I like the dewy lip look, hence, the need for a large amount of lip balm as base and finishing.

<ins>Quick Beauty Tip</ins>: Apply a generous amount of moisturiser before makeup application, simply wipe off excess moisture with a clean tissue.
