However, how you remove your hair is up to you! There’s many options. These include:

Shaving
It’s the old, affordable, standby. You can buy a disposable razor for under $10, and take care of business yourself in the shower. Then again, you may also get nicks and blood shed…way less attractive!

Laser on, Laser off
Many girls will try bikini waxes, do some sugaring, and ultimately decide on a more permanent solution. (No, not death.)

Laser hair removal is a growing trend in annihilating unwanted hair, especially in the bikini area, and the procedure has improved recently: There’s less chance of being scarred, and even patients with blonde hair or African Americans can have it work for them now.

When you want to take it off, there are lots of options. Our favorite spot for laser hair removal in New York City is Phoenix Rising Laser. Owner and operator Morgan has a menu of services that ranges from “Kitty Litter” to “Skoop Away.” (Think about it… you’ll figure it out.) I had my own Brazilian bikini done there, and not only was it a success — it created something of a laser-addiction!

It’s pretty high tech: Laser works via pulsed light and RF energy that petrify active hair follicles. Since hair follicles grow and regrow in a cycle and only growing follicles are affected by treatment, even the most sophisticated laser hair removal treatments require multiple sessions to ensure full effectiveness. Usually you go about once a month for 6-8 sessions, but it varies from case to case.

Wax It Off!

Laser isn’t for everyone though, and many have found happiness with waxing.

We all know though that some degree of pain will be a part of the game. “Many new improved waxing techniques have been introduced that reduce client discomfort and prolong results,” says skin expert Annet King. Look for a skin therapist that has been trained in a technique called “Original Speed Waxing.” Speed Waxing involves a unique application and removal method that saves time and minimizes discomfort by using specially cut strips of cotton pellon for faster depilation with less hair breakage.

No matter where you wax, be sure your skin is prepared.

Waxing Legs

“If choosing the waxing option, try not to shave in between sessions, it is very difficult to wax stubble caused by shaving and hair needs to grow to a certain length to wax all hair evenly. Exfoliating with loofah or body scrub in circular motion going upward away from hair growth helps prevent ingrown hair and leaves skin smooth — exfoliate at least 2-3 times a week

Try Some Sugar
Perhaps you want a little…sugar. Sugaring is an ancient method of hair removal, dating back to the Greeks and the Egyptians. It is similar to waxing, but is considered gentler and less painful, and provides instantaneous results.

It used to only be available in Europe, but now you will find it in many salons! It, like waxing, lasts about 3 weeks.

There are so many new women’s razors out there, they can be confusing, not to mention a bit of an expense to try them all and find the one you love. That is why, when Schick’s PR contacted me about their new razor, I said *sure, Id love to give it a try.* Guess what, I was confused – that is the same razor I have been using for the last 6 months or so. In fact, that is the third one I have owned because my daughter took mine. Twice I think because I can’t find my old one now. So, without a big need for a big review, I can indeed tell you without a doubt that the Schick Quattro is my razor of choice.

The biggest advantage that this razor has over some of the others on the market is that it fits my hand very well and it doesn’t slip in the watery-soapy environment of the tub. I really think that is my number one requirement of a razor. I don’t care much if it has 3 or 5 or 10 blades (the Quattro, maybe needless to say, has 4) – they all shave just fine, but darn it, if I have to fish around in the tub 50 million times to find that slippery razor, I am done.

While you’re checking out Schick, have some fun and create your dream date (send to a friend, post on myspace, have fun with it, harass your girlfriends) – here is mine:

Isn’t he cute? I didn’t give him a voice, but you can do that too and make him say what you want him to say. Ooh la la. Just imagine the fun with your girlfriends. He looks nothing like my hubby though, who really is my dream date. *muah*

Interesting article at Straight Dope about just why that is. Marketing is the culprit – what a surprise. But, regardless of why, the fact remains that we do, and I personally wouldn’t want it any other way. I read a bit at AgingFabulous this morning about cavemen shaving with shells, and thankfully we don’t have to do that anymore. There are a zillion alternatives, a zillion razor styles and brands to choose from along with soaps, creams, potions to make it easier/better/safer/smoother.

The razor I am currently using is the Intuition razor, by Schick. As far as razors go, this is by far NOT the closest shaving razor out there, but what it lacks in super closeness it gains in speed and convenience. I can shave my legs on the fly with this razor, there is no need for soap, because it is built in to the head of the razor. I can do a “drive by” shave, all I need is a bit of water. I keep one of these on our boat as well, with a floatie attached to it, and when I feel the need, I just throw it in the lake, jump in, and shave right there in the lake. Nice!

There are times when I love a super close shave. Let me make a little confession here – my husband and I went to an…er…exotic dance club one time – well, honestly, we have been more than once (is that bad? LOL), but this particular time I wound up sitting with one of the dancers and talking for awhile. She had, by far, the closest shaven legs I have ever even imagined – like a hair had never grown there in the first place. Yes, I rubbed them pretty well, it was truly amazing to me. Ha! Anyway, she told me that she exfoliated very well and shaves in every which direction until there is absolutely nothing there. I suspect she had very fine hair in the first place though.

So to make a wrap of a post that is, and could continue going on forever – the steps to getting as close of a shave as possible:

1. Soak in the tub or stand in the shower for a few minutes to allow your hair to soften. Not too long though, or your skin will swell up and make your shave not as close as you think it is.
2. Use a fresh blade on whatever razor you love (always a good idea for infection prevention anyway).
3. Exfoliate your legs first with soap or a scrub and using an exfoliating glove (these are the BEST).
4. Shave a couple of times, in a couple of directions, using long, smooth strokes.
5. Follow up with a good body cream.

While I was writing this, my friend Hsien left a comment wondering about how to get a close shave on your underarms that doesn’t leave a shadow. This is tricky, and honestly is nearly impossible to do with shaving, especially if you are a brunette (which Hsien is). Avoiding the shadow is best done with another method of hair removal, which will either be more expensive or more painful than shaving. Pick one. I pick – more painful. I’ll talk about that later on this week. I would love to hear your razor recommendations – they are so expensive to just try out, and I would like to have a good, close shaving razor along with my trusty speed and convenience razor.
