Did you know that Avon is celebrating its 120th anniversary on Friday? Yes, that is one HUNDRED and twenty. Wow. That is a mighty long time in the business, there can’t be too many more companies out there that can compete on that level.
That all makes me glad that one of my dearest friends has become an Avon salesperson. Along with my variety of Instant Manicure colors I purchased from her, I also tried this peel, the Anew Clinical Retexturizing Peel.

I have only been using it for about a week, but I do like the results so far. This is, by far, the easiest peel product I have used – one step – wipe a pad over your cleansed face. I like that! No mixing, no steps, no waiting, no removing with a special cloth…and the ultra mild “sensation” with it lets me know it is doing something for me. I like a peel with a “sensation” attached to it. And, for the relatively inexpensive price of $25, I got a little lighted pedestal mirror. Ok, it is cheap, and the battery operated light “might” give me sufficient light to do an evening makeup job – but still, it is a gift with purchase, and we love gifts with purchases!!

I am also getting ready to start using the Anew Clinical Eye Lift, which is a product that my mother uses and loves, and I tried it and really liked it when I was in Tennessee earlier this summer. So, I will get back to you on that one in a couple of weeks. It is definitely a cool product.

Giving back to your community is one of the most beautiful things you can do, but I am sure you know that. As we gear up towards Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), there is so much information out there about the philanthropical things that people have done for their communities. This is a nice one from one of my favorite (ok, my favorite) beauty companies, Paul Mitchell, and the money they have raised for many charities, giving you one more reason (besides their exceptional product quality) to buy and use Paul Mitchell:

Giving back to your community is one of the most beautiful things you can do, but I am sure you know that. As we gear up towards Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), there is so much information out there about the philanthropical things that people have done for their communities. This is a nice one from one of my favorite (ok, my favorite) beauty companies, Paul Mitchell, and the money they have raised for many charities, giving you one more reason (besides their exceptional product quality) to buy and use Paul Mitchell:

Joannie Rossiter started her day at the Paul Mitchell The School annual summit ready to enhance her hairstyling knowledge, and finished the day with no hair of her own – yet she couldn’t be happier. Joannie and 40 other Paul Mitchell School owners and employees helped to raise $100,000 in a single day for cancer research, by shaving their heads in a show of support for a Paul Mitchell School instructor diagnosed with breast cancer.

It’s just another day at Paul Mitchell. Commitment to philanthropic involvement is the norm at Schools of the 26-year-old performance hair product company. “Our Paul Mitchell School network believes that giving back is not just a once-a-year happening; it is our daily duty,” says Paul Mitchell The School Dean, Winn Claybaugh,

Thus far in 2006, the collective efforts of the 66 Schools have raised almost $1 million on behalf of organizations like The American Cancer Society, Leeza Gibbons’ Leeza’s Place – an Alzheimer care organization, various AIDS and HIV causes, Pay It Forward and The Andrew Gomez Foundation – dedicated to emotional and financial support of future salon professionals, as well as organizations in each School community.

“We’re totally blown away again at the unbelievable spirit and generosity of the beauty professionals within the Paul Mitchell School system,” says Leeza Gibbons, television personality and founder of Leeza’s Place. “All of us at the Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation consider ourselves truly blessed to have the honor of experiencing such powerful energy.”

The efforts don’t stop here for Paul Mitchell School students who year after year seek to outdo themselves. In the spirit of individual accomplishment and school camaraderie, each student has a role in making their mark even if it isn’t an easy ride.

One outstanding Paul Mitchell School graduate, amateur cyclist Brittany Seur joined five other Paul Mitchell students and teachers in June 2006 for a 585-mile-ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the AIDS Lifecycle effort. The Paul Mitchell participants each initially raised $2,500 for the cause and continue to improve upon their contributions. Brittany now takes her new passion for cycling to the streets; “I learned about something completely new that I wouldn’t have otherwise,” Brittany explains.

An education reaching far beyond school walls is what has made Paul Mitchell Schools one of the top seven fastest growing franchises in the nation in 2005. “We help students build a strong foundation and substantial resources, encouraging passion for the industry as a whole. When the future professionals graduate from Paul Mitchell schools, they are equipped with a highly developed skill set,” asserts Claybaugh.

Every student has a role. A two month fundraising effort, involving all Paul Mitchell Schools, raised a grand total of $440,000. Paul Mitchell’s Great Lakes Academy from Port Huron, Michigan, set the bar with over $25,000 total raised; each school raised no less than $10,000.

Paul Mitchell Advanced Education, LLC, launched the Partner School franchise operation in October 2003. Nationwide there are now 58 Paul Mitchell Partner Schools and eight company-owned Paul Mitchell The School locations; 31 Paul Mitchell Partner School franchise locations opened in 2004 alone. Paul Mitchell The School was co-founded in 2001 by John Paul DeJoria, Co_Founder and CEO of John Paul Mitchell Systems and Winn Claybaugh, motivational speaker and Dean of Paul Mitchell The School.

Paul Mitchell products, instructors and students follow an aggressive ongoing educational and cultural development program to mirror that of the flagship Paul Mitchell The School in Costa Mesa, California. Paul Mitchell Schools are currently open in San Francisco, Dallas, Austin, Honolulu, Atlanta, Orlando, Tampa, Provo, San Diego, Providence, Cleveland, Port Huron and Frederick, as well as other cities across the nation. Paul Mitchell School openings in 2006 include San Antonio, San Jose, Houston, Cincinnati, Danbury, Columbus, Allentown and more.

Paul Mitchell, manufacturer of salon-only professional hair care products, has been serving the professional beauty industry for 26 years. The company currently produces over 90 products (including the brands Paul Mitchell®, Modern Elixirs®, The Tea Tree® Collection, Paul Mitchell LAB™, PM SHINES® and Paul Mitchell the color®). All Paul Mitchell hair and skin care products are manufactured within the United States. Paul Mitchell products are sold through 25 distributors within the United States to approximately 90,000 hair salons. Internationally, Paul Mitchell works with distributors in 45 countries that supply thousands of hair salons. The company does not test, and never has tested, its products on animals.

The Brains showed us this (not-so) lovely jewelry (?) item available at Black Chandelier this morning. What is it, you might ask? Why, it is a hissing Madagascar cockroach, encrusted with Swarovski crystals, and attached to a little chain that you can pin on your outfit, of course! Nice! For 80 bucks you too can have one of these gems – they eat bananas, and if you feed them and give them water and shelter, you might get lucky and have your jewel for a year.

Now, I am a science girl and I love a cool bug just as much as the next guy – but where is Pam Anderson when we need her??? She always seems to be around when we don’t. Ha ha (really, I love her, but she wouldn’t love me so much, I am afraid, seeing as I would be rocking furs if I didn’t live in sweltering Texas). And while I am ranting, look at this model in the picture above. Icky looking fingernails – all that drama in the hair, makeup and outfit – but, I guess, who needs nail polish when you have a Swarovski cockroach on your hand. I do think that a nice nude or french manicure or SOMETHING would make that little buggy look a little nicer, but thats just me.

Please do tell if you have one of these – I would love love love to meet the gal that would rock this bug!

It would take me forever to get her nails filed, because I wanted to round them gracefully, but she always insisted on the POINT. I just didn’t get it. LOL She said that she played bridge and it made it much easier to pick up cards, but when I saw this picture, I had one of those big “ah ha” moments – this is EXACTLY what her nails looked like – I wish she had shown me this picture years ago, I have never seen nails like it before or since, until today.

Maybe. Why do we put ourselves through the stress?

I am sitting here watching my very favorite movie, The Full Monty – and if you have never seen it before, it is the story of 5 “regular” men who are down on their luck and decide to do a Chippendale’s type show to make some money. And it is oh-so hilarious – rent it if you have never seen it before, you will have to watch it a few times to get all of the heavy accented English. Dave, the “fat” guy, who isn’t very fat really, is all worried about his pudgy tummy and is going through all kinds of insecurities about it – pretty much like I am over mine. He says: “Anti-wrinkle cream there is, but anti-fat bastard cream there is not.” LOL What a shame. We are what we are, and no overnight sweating it with Saran Wrap or mad amount of exercise during the last week is going to make any difference. Mine is particularly bad from my last bout with quitting smoking – and the 2 or 3 attempts over the last couple of years – I packed on about 20 pounds with each time. *sigh* I am very thankful I am tall.

But, I was never a skinny chick before, and I likely never will be – but I keep trying to eat healthy, get a reasonable amount of exercise, and hope that someday it will all kick in. And I hope my classmates from 20 years ago still love me for my charming personality! Ha!
