Thin Equals Beauty?

October 23, 2005 by Christina Jones

Dolly Butz of the Sioux City Journal has written this article, Thin Equals Beauty?, about online groups that are searching not for eating disorder recovery help and support, but acceptance and affirmation and encouragement.

“They strive to look like Kate Moss, Nicole Richie and Mary-Kate Olsen. Their goal is physical perfection and they are willing to risk their lives in order to achieve it.

Welcome to the cyber world of pro-ana, where eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia are considered “life styles” and “Thin = Beauty.”

What a frightening thing this is. As I am researching this post, I am blown away at the numbers of these people who think that a skeletal figure is beautiful. They say over and over how they are so happy that college has started because they will no longer have to pretend to eat. I read a blog that said “Did you see Nicole Ritchie, she looks amazing. I love her collar bones.” Look at them above, before and after her extreme weight loss. Do you love them?

From reading an article in the Wikipedia, I learned that in 2005, these groups have declined, but I still found a list of nearly 300 of them on LiveJournal alone.

I am going to have a piece of pie now, and rejoice in the fact that my bones are fully hidden.

in my vocabulary, thin is definitely not equal to beautiful.(!!) and like you, i too am glad that my bones are fully hidden . LOL! :) )

I’m guessing we all give very comfortable hugs. No bones showing here either. :)

The pro-ana movement is something serious, though. Their families must be so worried about them.

So much more beautiful (not to mention soft) than bone on bone hugging, don’t you think? You are so right, Lei, I was glad to read that their numbers had decreased this year, but I am sure that it has more to do with groups like Yahoo dropping the pro-ana groups more than the actual number of people declining. Very sad stuff.

Jus’ thought about my husband saying OUCH! after hugging me, out of the bone that digged into him!

Thank got I’m not that skinny….
must do something for the Pro-ana movement.

Any ways even I handle a blog on women and definitely going to add this one on mine.

  5. CC Jones says:

Ouch! Thankfully I don’t have that problem either (I hope my hubby appreciates that!! LOL). Thanks for reading Charu, and I hope to see you around again soon!

  6. AnP says:

thanks to media, a lot of young girls do think that thin is beautiful! :/

  7. CC Jones says:

Thin is fine but–oh, this is just way too extreme. And then you go looking at people like Kate Moss, and figure out just what THEY are doing to be so thin..it is a vicious cycle. I am having a brownie tonight! :)

  8. xena says:

I think nicole richie looks gross!! But kate moss looks fantastic, yes thin is beautiful… but being thin and looking sick are two diffrent things.
    Nicole looks sick.
    Kate moss+beatuiful!

  9. CC Jones says:

xena-Thanks for the comment. I am glad you are able to distinguish between thin and sickly, but Kate Moss’s methods of maintaining her weight are just as destructive. I wish people would embrace the joy of being alive and in good health as much as the joy of being thin.

  10. abbi says:

hey guys! yeah i love kate moss too, but im glad shes getting over her drug addiction now. nicole looked good when she’d lost a little weight , but shes gone too far now! its just time now before her health seriously suffers. love ya x

  11. CC Jones says:

Hi Abbi-agreed all the way. I hope Kate Moss can stick with rehab, but as long as she is modeling, I am afraid it is going to be a problem for her. She will have to be one strong willed woman to not get sucked back in. Thanks for reading, Abbi :)

  12. Beba says:

  1. [...] With Fashion Week coming up, once again I keep hearing all of this talk about the skinny models, and anorexia and they are not eating healthy and this and that. I think I have mentioned before how I hate seeing someone that looks like a skeleton on the runway, I just don’t think it looks good. Someone obviously thinks they make great clothes hangers, but I get distracted looking at their knee and elbows and how they are bigger than their thighs. Gross. [...]
