Mintel Beauty Innovation has seen a dramatic increase in the number of new personal care products launched for men. So far in 2008, they have tracked over 500 new men’s personal care products in the US, a substantial increase from the 375 launched in 2007. Globally, Mintel has recorded more than 3,600 new men’s personal care product launches to date in 2008.

But beyond increased volume in the marketplace, Mintel Beauty Innovation’s Taya Tomasello sees more men’s personal care products being designed for advanced male grooming:

“Beauty manufacturers are trying to stay one step ahead of men’s evolving grooming habits. New personal care products launched for men today step beyond the basics of showering, shaving and deodorizing. At both the high and low ends of the market, new men’s grooming products try to provide tangible benefits based on appearance, specific body needs and ethical concerns.”

There’s rapid growth in four areas of advanced male grooming.

1. Lip-, eye- and hand-specific – Premium and mass market brands alike now offer products for men that promise to enhance certain areas of the body. Clarins Men Lip Guard and Jack Black Industrial Strength Hand Healer emphasize functionality, not preening, to appeal to ordinary men. Still other products like L’Oréal Men Expert eye cream and the 4VOO Shape and Shine Nail Set target men seeking a flawless appearance.

2. Make-up and self-tanning – Make-up for men is still a super-premium, niche market in the US, but Mintel Beauty Innovation has seen many new brands emerge this year. Jean Paul Gaultier Monsieur and Clinique Skin Supplies for Men remain key players. Many personal care brands, including L’Oréal, also feature self-tanning products for men.

3. Anti-aging and exfoliating ingredients – Men’s grooming lines increasingly boast semi-scientific claims based on anti-aging or exfoliating ingredients. Biotherm Homme’s High Recharge Non-Stop Moisturizing Anti-Fatigue Concentrate uses the anti-aging ingredient ginseng, but others have included co-enzyme Q10 or creatine for anti-aging benefits. Exfoliation has become a focus as well with products like Unilever’s Axe Skin Contact Smoothing Shower Scrub featuring cactus milk to exfoliate and smooth the skin.

4. Organic, natural and ethical – Mintel sees organic and natural products driving growth in many sectors; men’s personal care is no exception. John Allan’s facial moisturizer features natural ingredients, while Aveda Men uses organic ingredients in its hair care. The Body Shop has long promoted ethical causes and opposed animal testing.

“In contrast to women’s personal care, the market for men’s grooming is just opening,” remarks Taya Tomasello. “Our research shows men are far less likely than women to use skincare products like moisturizers, exfoliants or even body washes. So tailoring new products to the needs of beauty-inexperienced males will help manufacturers expand the advanced men’s grooming market.”

According to a recent survey commissioned by Target, more than 60 percent of women and men think that when a woman adds an extra punch of color to her beauty palette, she’s signaling that she feels fabulous about herself – and after all, added confidence is the ultimate accessory.

Additional Target poll findings:

o Almost 40 percent of women who wear red lipstick put on the touch of rouge to feel feminine, while 37 percent do so to feel sexy.

o To dress up an outfit, 44 percent of women wear high heels and 61 percent choose to get their hair done.

o The majority of men and women polled (33 percent) named Angelina Jolie as the celebrity who has the most sought-after red lips.

o 61 percent of respondents perceive wearing red on lips or nails as neither “naughty” or “nice” – showing that there are no stereotypes associated with this versatile shade.

I remember all through my younger years (and possibly to be repeated this year), I’d hook up with my mom at around 4 am, get coffee to go, and hit whatever random sale was tickling our fancy – and often leave disappointed.

The annual Allure Catalyst Report polled American women about their beauty and beauty-buying habits. While this poll is mostly designed to be used more by the beauty companies themselves, here are some of the results. I would love to hear where you fit in on these:

Women use 13 beauty products at least once a week and use 7 brands regularly.

It would cost $199 to replace all of her beauty products.

The Kaybots and the like (um, Mary Kay and other home sales) are getting 19% of your beauty dollars (this surprises me a little), while Sepora and the like are getting 12%. 14% shop online (this surprises me too – I never shop OFFLINE if I can help it), leaving the bulk of you shopping at the drug stores, supermarkets, department stores and the Super Wal-Mart. I would like to know what chunk THEY take of your beauty dollars. I bet its not small.

You like the cost of beauty products least of all when shopping (duh…lol), then comes the pushy salespeople and being overwhelmed by choices. Sounds like fun, huh? Perhaps you should try shopping online!

Last but not least – you leave the house with four beauty items in your purse – heading the list are lip balm, lotion, lipstick and lipgloss. Is this you?

As for me, you KNOW I buy all my products online – I am probably very faithful to 7 brands (off the top of my head – Smashbox, Paul Mitchell, Bioelements, bare escentuals, MAC, Elizabeth Arden and Estee Lauder), it would cost me WAY more than $199 to replace my beauty routine, I get overwhelmed by all the choices and in my purse I carry lipgloss, portable mineral foundation (Neutrogena at the moment, but I really don’t like it other than its portability), and mascara.

It is kind of interesting to compare the 3 lists – and was sort of notable to me that there isn’t but one MAC product in the editors lineup, and bare Minerals makes a good showing in the bloggers list (and the members list as well). And my bestest friend’s favorite perfume L’Eau d’Issey by Issey Miyake didn’t make it either – but that Burberry *is* pretty amazingly scented stuff I bet. Have you smelled it before? Currently going on at Glam are the Beauty Awards – I love to share my opinions, so things like this are right up my alley (remember the Allure Beauty Ballot not long ago?). I do wish they had lots more choices in each category, as my true favorites are rarely listed and there is no where for write in votes, but they do have lots of good products to choose from, and it is really nice to see what their idea of the top products are and get some ideas for my next trip to the beauty depot! I am going to spend the next little bit finishing this up and then maybe we can talk about it some more. Go fill it out too, so we will be on the same page.

The question is: How long does it take you to get ready for a really special event? Think an elegant party or even a really special first date. Something like a wedding could be stretched out over a week, so skip that kind of getting ready.

I hope to hear from you on this poll, I will be interested to see if I am really out of the ordinary here, but based on the study I referred to below, I doubt I am.
