Who says you have to spend hours in front of the mirror making hair look perfect. This year’s hottest looks, such as the beehive and bob are over, so let hair go in 2009 for a sexy, fun, “I just threw myself together,” look.

Oh no, my hair just naturally looks this good!

Style hair as usual and when finished, flip hair upside down and shake it up. First apply a drop of P2 Hair Honey hair-molding product. Next shake and scrunch hair. Flip right side up and lightly finger thru to calm down ends. Be careful not to make it too perfect!

Night out on the town

Randomly grab sections of dry hair and mist with P2 RefresHair, a light flexible setting spray. Twist each section down to the scalp and clip with a Bobbi pin. The bigger the section the bigger the wave, and let dry while you apply some sexy evening makeup. After dry, simply un-twist each section, finger thru and spray again. Hair curl pattern should be uneven and soft.

Messy Updo

Easily done with the right tools, first apply a hair-refreshing product to the entire head then lightly back-comb the whole head with a wide-tooth comb. Next apply a few silicone shine drops, rub hands together and smooth. Sweep hair up into a loose twist or ponytail and secure with a few pins. Spray on a light holding spray to finish. Try P2 RefresHair and P2 Fluid Spray.

On my whiny brain today is Bumble & Bumble.  *Why o why* do they not allow people to sell them online?  What is the point?  Is it diversion fears?  Maybe they just don’t *want* to have a thriving company that sells like mad.  I don’t know, but I sure wish they would reconsider that.  I have a few B&B things that I love and can’t live without, but the ordeal I have to go through to get them is just too much.

I have told you about their Hair Powder before.  I still think its a life saver when you need a color job and if you really need a hair washing, but just don’t have the time.

I also adore the Surf Spray.  After I do that elusive hair washing, my hair is so clean that it is flat to my head.  Surf Spray gives it that much needed life, and it is sooooooooo easy and quick.

Those two products are really the only things that make me go through the torture of hunting down B&B, and then trying new things while I am there.  I am so far not a great fan of their shampoos and conditioners (too expensive, not enough efficacy), and am using their Brilliantine shine spray now, and its *ok* but nothing different from a bunch of other similar products out there and nothing I would go through a ring of fire to obtain (like that hair powder…lol).  What do you all think about Bumble & Bumble – is it worth the effort?  Do I keep exploring?

I keep it by the tub, and use it on my wet body before I dry off. It leaves you totally smooth and very nice and moisturized without being greasy (after a very few minutes anyway). This new line of products from Vaseline have other ingredients besides their classic petroleum jelly, these are absolutely not just repackaged vaseline. They are not expensive, and totally worth a try.

I have the classic Vaseline all over my house. Tubs of it. Everywhere! There are a zillion uses for it, and did you know half of those zillion are beauty related! Here are 50 uses for Vaseline that are totally beauty related (and one very special one at the end that is not), so while you’re out trying the new and wonderful products, grab (another) tub of the classic Vaseline – I know you can put it to good use!

Here are the top 5 uses:

1. Put a coat on your eyelashes before you go to bed. Lots of people swear by this – and say it will make your lashes grow longer and thicker over time.

2. Put a coat of vaseline on your feet at night, cover them with socks and wake up to softer feet – every day!

3. Put vaseline on your elbows every day – they will stay soft!

4. Put Vaseline on your cuticles several times a day for softer and better looking cuticles every day.

5. Put Vaseline on chapped lips

Kate is in talks with her friend and hairdresser James Brown (no, not the dead guy musician) to start a new line of hair care products. [source] Interestingly enough, the line will feature her image, not her name. I am not sure why. Do they not want to be associated with her name? Not bloody likely. Does she not want to too closely associate with the product line? I can’t imagine, especially after seeing her name splashed all over her recent clothing line. Questions questions. I guess, since they are still in talks, it remains to be seen.

On a related note, Kate is plummetting down in this picture like I am into being that gray rooted woman I can’t stand seeing. This is just about what my hair looks like now. Still. haven’t. colored. Oy.

It’s hard to imagine that what seems like such a superficial thing is so closely tied in to what’s inside me, but it sure is.  I can’t think beauty when there is trauma going on (my own or somewhere else in the world that has captivated me), and even have a hard time when I am on the road, or otherwise preoccupied.  That either makes me a pretty crummy writer or maybe just normal, who knows (rhetorical – please don’t answer…lol).   But regardless, I am getting beautiful, despite the fact that I am rapidly decending into one of those rooty folks I get so irritated seeing.  I am glad at least that I have come to terms with my grayness (unlike Hsien – heh).  I need a hair color job, desperately, but at least I got my nails and toes done last night (I am really loving this Estee  Lauder Bronze Goddess nail polish – the whole collection really - makes me feel like a tanned Brazillian beauty), so am not completely falling apart – yet anyway. Hair color this weekend, I must.  I MUST!

Tracy asks me: I used Sun-in lightener about 3 weeks ago, with not a lot of effects. After 3 weeks I used a semi permanent color, and my hair is now pitch black (was light brown). Is there anything I can do?

What happened? Your hair was extremely dry and porous after using the Sun In, and it soaked up a lot more hair color than it was supposed to.

How do I fix this? You have a few options here – none of them are particularly fun or easy – try them as soon as you can after your color job, the longer that color is in your hair, the harder it will be to remove, just like a stain in your clothing. First, try to find Prell Original shampoo. This is the only one that will work. Wash your hair in the hottest water you can stand, as many times as you can until when you shampoo and rinse, your water is totally clear. If you can’t find Prell Original, try Tide laundry detergent. The last resort method is: you can buy some powdered bleach and 20 volume peroxide (this is what comes in bleach kits at the drugstore), and mix them in with your shampoo (use a bottle). Use about 3 tablespoons of shampoo, 1 tablespoon each of bleach and peroxide. Shampoo it in GENTLY, don’t rub too much, just distribute it through your hair and leave it on for about 10 minutes then rinse out and repeat your shampoo (without bleach). Do NOT do this with Prell. Use your regular shampoo.

After all of this, your hair is gonna look and feel awful. Condition it WELL. Very well – several times over a few days if you can do it. Use something really good and deep like Paul Mitchell Hair Repair or Biolage Cera-Repair, leaving it in for a few hours or even overnight. After that, you can work on evening out your color again. Choose something a shade or two lighter than what you want, and you can mix it half with water/half with peroxide. The purpose of this is to even it out the best you can without causing any more grabbing to occur.

How can this be prevented in the future? Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! We all do damaging things to our hair that can make it more dry and porous. Simple everyday things like blowdrying and straightening and curling will do it. Even lots of wind can blow the moisture right out of your hair. Use products to protect your hair from heat styling, condition it regularly with a moisturizing conditioner (as opposed to the repairing conditioners listed above), and if you are planning on coloring it, a few days before you do, be sure and really deeply condition it. If you are impulsive like me, and decide you want a new color and you want it NOW, mix up a spray bottle with a medium viscosity mixture of conditioner and water, and mist it onto the dryer parts of your hair – most likely the top layer which is exposed to the elements, and the ends of your hair. If your hair is porous, it will grab onto the conditioner and there won’t be any room in the hair shaft for the color to grab.

Just for grins and giggles, this tendency of hair to “grab” can be used for good. My hair used to be the color of Pink’s in the above picture (yeah, way back in the glorious 80’s!). I used a temporary hair dye to do it, but first I bleached my hair out so light that it was so porous that it grabbed that pink color, so it became a permanent fixture. Well, until my grandmother passed away and I had to try to cover it up for her funeral, but thats another color story for another day.

I sure hope that is helpful Tracy, and anyone else who may have dealt with this. I sure have, and I sure know lots of other folks who have as well, so don’t feel alone.
