Canon Ixus 80 IS vs Canon PowerShot A470

I’m seriously thinking of getting myself a camera for my birthday this year and I have narrowed my choices between two models: the Canon Ixus 80 IS and the Canon Powershot A470.

Well, if money wasn’t such an issue, the Canon Ixus 80 IS would definitely be my first choice. But then when I saw the features of the Powershot A470 and Ixus 80 IS were quite similar, I started thinking whether it was worth the money to spend so much on the Ixus 80 IS.

Megapixels: 7.1 MP vs 8 MP

The Powershot A470 is a 7.1 megapixel camera while the Ixus 80 IS is a 8 megapixel camera. Honestly, that’s not much of a difference. And I really don’t need that much high of a resolution anyway unless I plan to make my photos into billboards.

Look: Thick or Thin

Have you guys actually seen or held an Ixus 80 IS in your hands? It’s so sleek! And not to mention it comes in 5 different colors: Silver, Chocolate, Pink, Blue and Gold. The Powershot A470 on the other hand is a bit thicker, twice the thickness of the Ixus 80 IS and a few millimeters longer. But it does come in different colors, too.

Battery Life: AA Rechargeables or Li Ion?

One thing I like about the Powershot model more is that it uses AA batteries instead of having it’s own Li-Ion. For one thing, AA batteries are more available. If I forget the battery, I can just buy one at the nearest convenience store. Also, I wouldn’t have to worry about losing the charger too! But ofcourse, AA batteries have shorter battery life.

Price: Php 17,950 vs Php 9,450

Now, this is the big question. Am I really willing to spend so much more for vanity reasons? Both cameras basically have the same features aside from the others I just mentioned. They both have Motion Detection and Face Detection Technology which I consider really important, among other things.

Obviously, compared to the Ixus 80 IS, the Powershot A470 isn’t so pretty to look at. It looks clunky and chunky. But I really think it’s more worth my money.

So what about you? What would you choose between the two?

I choose Canon Ixus 80. We should also consider the convenience it brings to us in terms of mobility (easy to bring since it’s not bulky). I think, tha’ts one aspect we are paying for.I actually am planning to buy this model…

  2. Ted says:

You can go for the A470 if a little bit of bulk doesn’t bother you. The capabilities are the same. If you want quality though, go for the G9. Looking for the G9’s quality with the looks? The Ixus 960 IS is the camera for you. Prices go on this scale… A470, 80 IS, G8, 960 IS. The last two are a whopping 12.1 Megapixels!

ei, im also thinking of buying a camera, well next week,
i initially plan to buy the Canon Powershot G9, but some unexpected things happened and i now fall short of my budget.. but still i need to buy a camera..
    here are my choices:
    Canon Ixus 950is
    Canon Ixus 80 is
    Canon Powershot A720is
    Canon Powershot A590is
    Sony Cybershot T200
I still can’t decide until now.. its really hard when you have a low budget huhuhuh
I initially picked the A470 coz of its low price tag, but i reallized i need an IS feature so i erased that out of the list :)

I just bought my new Canon IXUS 80 is. It’s so cool and worth the price. It’s beautiful and handy. The pictures are clear. Worth it, for beautiful moments to capture.

  5. Shane says:

i’m also torn between these two cameras. but the ixus appeals to me more because of the size and colors. but A470 is cheaper. oh well. :)

  6. Amy says:

just got my ixus 80is heheheh

  7. David says:

I just bought the PowerShot A470. For the price you cant beat the features. It is not that bulky and can fit in the pocket of most of my pants (except my extra tight jeans).
    Creat camera and super cheap!

  8. calvin says:

i happen to use a canon ixus 80 is (which i recently bought) and a powershot G9 (which i am using right now in the field). for me, they both share the same features except that the latter has a higher zoom length and megapizels (its more of a upgrade) but its bulky and heavy. so for me, i’d go for a canon ixus for its relative cheaper price but it still possesses the same feautures of the more costly powershot models.

  9. mine says:

ooh..a digicam’s on my wishlist this year,, hmm.i’m also having decision-making issues here..but i guess,, the a470 is probably the cam..very cheap and just right.. ;)

  10. Argie says:

Even if money is not an issue to me (and it is), I wouldn’t pick the IXUS 80is over the A470. The price difference between them is simply ridiculous considering their specs are almost the same. A little convenience doesn’t have to cost an extra 8,500 pesos.

  11. Gabriel says:

I have a powershot A470 and the alkaline batteries die in 3 hours.
Rechargeables don’t work. It says ‘change the batteries’. I will have to make a battery pack and plug it in the camera.
This is almost a fake camera.

  12. Sammy says:

Hi! i’d recommend you choose the A470, right now i have no problems with its shots, almost like a 8mp camera. also its kinda cheaper compare to any brands. i go for the cheaper with same features from an expensive one.. ;)

  13. andrea says:

@gabriel: It’s not really a function of hours but the number of shots the cam is capable, with consideration of the usage of flash.

  14. Lauren says:

I just bought my Canon IXUS 80 IS.
It`s really cool. =d> And it takes good photos. :>
    Nice.really nice.

  15. Jayson says:

Canon 80is’ battery is superb :) After long hours of usage, the battery is still good. Li Ion battery is way way better than those rechargeables..

  16. Hank from Holland says:

I have an Ixus 860 because I need a camera that fits in my shirt pocket. I bought my father an A470 for his birthday, but couldn’t resist to test it against my own camera. In my opinion, the A470 makes pictures that are just as sharp and well exposed as my own. Colors are equally superb with both camera’s. The A470 lacks the anti-shake but it includes an astonishing Super Macro mode that allows you to take sharp images from millimeter distance.
My conclusion: If size and battery life are important, go for the Ixus, but the A470 offers the same possibilities and image quality.

  17. astrodeus says:

    i choose ixus… it is beautiful…

  18. Ben says:

Just got ixus 80is. Excellent camera.

  19. kisses06 says:

i choose the ixus because it doesn’t have a cooldown time when taking shots, not necessarily 80 is but im sure 85 is does. I hate the time i have to wait to take another photo
