As expected, the fashions were hit and miss.  Which hip-hop diva looked Hot and which one was a Hot Mess?  Check out the following photos and let me know what you think.

Ashanti at the Hip Hop Honors

Is that Ashanti or Mrs. T?  I’m not feeling the curly ‘do, the long feather earring, the Terminator sunglasses, or the thigh high boots (they look vinyl).   The dress, however, would be salvageable with a different hair style, accessories, and boots.  My vote: Not Hot!

Eve at the Hip Hop Honors

I haven’t seen Eve at a red carpet affair in a while and she looks great in this sexy (not trashy), form-fitting little black dress. My vote: Hot!

Foxy Brown at the Hip Hop Honors.

Whoa!  Where do I begin? Foxy Brown has been through a lot lately, including temporary hearing loss and a stint in prison, but I can’t give this gaudy burlesque getup a sympathy fashion pass. Foxy, however, must find her tacky outfit just as funny as we do. My vote: Hot Mess!

What do you Hot Mamas think?  Do you like the yellow top paired with the light blue skirt and the gray and black shoes?  One thing I am certain of, however, is I’m not fond of the peep toe bootie/sandal trend.  The last thing your feet need in the summertime is to be encased in leather.

So what’s the final verdict?  Does Ashanti look Hot or Not?

Ashanti stars as Dorothy in Broadway's "The Wiz."

Although the production itself feels a bit dated, the enthusiastic cast have fun with a timeless story and songs that will inspire you to ease on down memory lane.  Tichina Arnold, best known for her roles on “Martin” and “Everybody Hates Chris” is a riveting, vocal powerhouse as the evil witch Evillene.  And Dawnn Lewis from “A Different World” is delightful and sings superbly as loveably ditzy witch Addaperle.  

Throughout the production — which also stars talented Tony winner LaChanze as Aunt Em and Glinda the Good Witch and comedic actor Orlando Jones as “The Wiz” (regrettably the musical’s weakest link) — dancers moon walk in a subtle salute to Michael Jackson, who starred in the screen version of “The Wiz” with Diana Ross.  My biggest qualm is that Ashanti, perhaps intimidated by comparisons to Stephanie Mills’ tear-jerking rendition, rushes through the anthemic closing song, “Home.”

The limited run of “The Wiz” closes Sunday, July 5.  So follow the yellow brick road to New York City Center if you’re in the Big Apple during the holiday weekend.  Tickets start at a recession-friendly $25.

Ashanti stars as Dorothy in Broadway's "The Wiz."

Do you think Ashanti will ease on down the road with ease?  Honestly, I don’t have high hopes for the frail-voiced songbird, but the promising supporting cast includes Tony-winner LaChanze (The Color Purple”).  So I’m planning to see the show, which runs at New York City’s City Center June 12 – July  5, later this month and will give you my review.

Is Ashanti's choice of hairstyle "Foolish?"

Here Ashanti strikes a pose in a tight, baby blue knit dress with a skinny red belt and orange-y red pumps. The outfit is cute, but did I mention it’s tight?  The real question mark looms over Ashanti’s banged bob wig.  I get the pixie look she was going for, but from some angles it sort of looks like someone plopped a mop atop her head.

But there I go being snarky again.  What do you think of Ashanti’s hair and outfit?  Is she Hot or Not?
