Janet Jackson at Milan Fashion Week.

In this photo, Janet was seated in the front row for the Versace show on Friday, September 25.  According to the U.K. Telegraph, the Versace show “brought sexy back” with a spring/summer 2010 collection accented by fluorescent colors, psychedelic prints, leather, chain-mail, cleavage and corsets.

After the tragic loss of her brother, Michael, and the prolonged media coverage of his death, it’s nice to see Janet smiling and looking so fab. Her black dress fits like a glove and I love her grey handbag.

The catwalk extravaganza in Milan runs through September 29 and also features designs by Giorgio Armani, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, and Fendi.

Angela Simmons at Fashion Week

Angela Simmons has become quite the fashion plate.  Her ruffled little black dress is accented by red lips, a wide black belt , bangles, and purple pumps.  My verdict: Hot!

Ciara at Fashion Week

Ciara’s got  legs and she knows how to use them.  Her black leather shorts, paired with a simple black top and long black boots, certainly show off her gams.  But the ensemble lacks any real razzzle dazzle.  Perhaps an up-do and a few accessories would help.  My verdict: Lukewarm

Kelly Rowland at Fashion Week

Kelly Rowland could model in any “Fashion Show” in this sexy-yet-ladylike black dress. The satin-y dress fits her like a glove and I love how her long extensions are styled to one side. My vote: Call the fire department honey cause this dress is Hot!  (Sorry, my Debbie Allen alter-ego took over for a minute.)

Rosario Dawson at Fashion Week

Rosario Dawson is one of the loveliest and most underrated actresses in Hollywood (she was excellent in the otherwise dismal “Seven Pounds”). Rosario, however, isn’t the most fashion-forward startlet and her wardrobe selections, including this one, are often frumpy.  But this is nothing a stylist can’t fix — just imagine how glam Rosario would look in either Kelly or Angela’s dress.  My verdict: Regrettably, Not Hot

Chanel Iman shimmies in a Rosa Cha swim suit.

With a bevy of high-waist bikinis and neon one-piece suits with woven details, Rosa Cha’s spring collection blended the old with the new — imagine if you will a cross between Hollywood pinup girl and Valley girl.  The brand’s new creative director, extraordinary Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchcovitch, was also inspired by lingerie.

“These items were designed to offer a sophisticated feeling for the season’s happenings,” Herchcovitch says in a press release.  ”An elegant woman can go from the beach or the pool to a more refined setting just by wearing a dres over her swimsuit.”

Gottex turned up the heat in the tents.

Wearability on and off the beach was also a common thread in Gottex’s spring collection.  This was the second time I’d been invited to a Gottex show — one of the most anticipated shows in the tents — and the music (Grace Jones!), the models, and the suits, of course, were hot.  This season, the brand took a more modern approach and explored “the fusion of technology and luxury.”  

Gottex is always a hot ticket and a hot show.

The collection was accented by hand-crafted details and the use of innovative fabrics such as laminated tulle, plasticized lycra, and laser cut jewel-like embellishments.  One of my favorite pieces was an ochre degrade lycra swimsuit dramatically paired with a fade-out desert print silk kimono and an ochre embroidered gold belt.

It had been a long, rainy day.  I’d already stood for the Twinkle by Wenlan show (a fresh, feminine collection highlighted by bohemian black and white separates) and I wasn’t feeling festive or patient. But there I was, part of the couture cattle waiting for nearly an hour to enter the Promenade. If I could have escaped the shoulder-to-shoulder flock, I would have promptly gone home.  But I didn’t.  And I’m glad.

Inside, I made a beeline for the first empty seat.  Tropical rhythms blared from the sound system, transforming the tents into a disco. I spotted singer Amerie in the front row.  After a few minutes, the neon emblazoned word “Arise” on the screen at the top of the catwalk unzipped and the first group of models emerged.

The collective featured four designers.  The first was Lisa Folawiyo’s Jewel by Lisa.  The boho chic collection was distinguished by a mix African fabrics and traditional textiles, and exquisite hand-embellished beads, sequins, and Swarovski crystals.

Tiffany Amber

Next up was Eric Raisina’s vibrant collection of funky, fringe accented designs; and Folake Coker’s Tiffany Amber collection of soft, flowing, red carpet-worthy gowns. Raisina scored double cool points for hiring striking “America’s Next Top Model” Cycle 12 contestant Amina to stalk the catwalk and for recruiting supermodel Chanel Iman.

David Tlale

The show concluded with David Tlale’s show-stopping collection featuring elaborate collars, harem pants, couture gowns, and guest supermodel Tyson Beckford.

Arise reflects a culture rarely represented, and I left beaming with pride. The show was predominated by beautiful black models (with a few fierce white and Asian girls), and hot damn those girls could strut.  This was one show that was definitely worth the wait.

That’s a first.  So is the excellent reality show’s move from Bravo to Lifetime, and a location change from New York City to Los Angeles.  Will it be as good?  I hope so and will be glued to the flat screen in my hotel room in Vancouver on Aug. 20.

It’s a good thing the Tents are stocked with free Smart Water to keep you hydrated.  ”We’re like a herd of sheep,” I overhead one woman tell her friend and nodded in agreement.

This time I was in a disorderly queue for the Terexov presentation, which had a city sophisticate glamour feel to it.  Highlights included an art deco cityscape print silk dress (top photo), a sleeveless black silk treated chiffon dress with an amazing bustle (below photo), and a gold silk treated chiffon dress (last photo). I imagine Ivanka Trump or some other upper crust socialite buying these clothes.  I’ll wait for the knock-offs to hit H&M.

When given the opportunity, I like to snap my own photos, which often results in…interesting shots. Last night, I had a few happy accidents I thought I’d share.
