Rihanna is certainly no shrinking violet. Here she takes yet another risk on the red carpet. To me, the flowery frock seems more appropriate for the Country Music Awards than for the American Music Awards.  What do you think — is Rihanna’s cut-out couture gown Hot or Not?

Leona Lewis likes to have fun with fashion.  The pointy bust line black leather (or is that vinyl?) mini is sexy in a Tina Turner “Beyond Thunderdome” kind of way.  Yet, in this ensemble the English rose looks like a good girl playing dress up like a bad girl. Does Leona’s dress sizzle or fizzle?

Hot Mama Daily: How long have you been making the shoulder jewelry?

Seville: I came up with the concept in July 2009 and by October 2009 I designed the full line.

HMD: What’s your inspiration for starting the jewelry line?

Seville: I was working with a pop star, Nelly Furtado, and imagined all of the beautiful things I would love to create if I were her personal stylist. One of the concepts I envisioned was a drapery silhouette for the shoulder that would later become babettte epaulette.

HMD: Your shoulder jewelry would look hot on Rihanna.

Seville: I have pieces for Rihanna that I am waiting to make for her.

HMD: How long does it take to make each piece?

Seville: All of the pieces are handmade in Astoria, Queens. It takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to create each piece.

HMD: What’s the significance of the name babette epaulette?

Seville: I came across the name babette a few months ago and I loved it. After showing my pieces to a friend, she reminded me that shoulder accents worn in the military are called epaulettes. And I like the way the name came together, babette epaulette.

HMD: Before you launched your own shoulder jewelry line, you were a stylist.  Besides Nelly Furtado, whom have you worked with?

Seville: I’ve been a wardrobe stylist for 5 years and an assistant art director for 2 years. I’ve worked in wardrobe for several MTV shows including “Brooke Knows Best,” and “Making the Band,” and on the films “Away We Go,” “Soulmen,” and “New in Town.”  As an assistant art director, I’ve worked with “The Real Housewives of New York,” among other [productions].

HMD: Where are the shoulder pieces available?

Seville: I’m in the process of getting into Patricia Field and building a shop on my site. I’m also in talks with a few of my favorite stores in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. They range from $110-$160.

HMD: Do you have plans to expand into making other types of jewelry?

Seville: My focus right now are the shoulder pieces, but I know this world is magical and I will follow the path that lights up in front of me!

Here are photos of several attention-grabbing outfits Rihanna wore out and about in New York City during the month of September. Based on these fashion statements, I can’t wait to peep her October wardrobe!

Rihanna is channeling Grace Jones.

Rihanna shows her flair for avant fashion in this draped black mini with a matching hood and jeweled boots. The flyest part of her ensemble — black, pyramid-studded “Baracuda” glasses by Kerin Rose ($350) – are available for pre-order.  And yes, apparently you can see wearing these sunglasses at night.

This ensemble is perfection from head to toe.  I love the cropped, white tank; the layered, gold necklaces; the draped, army green skirt; the oversized handbag; and the brown booties.

Who stole half of Rihanna's shirt?

This look is a little too edgy for my taste.  I get it that’s what Rihanna was going for, but instead of looking cutting edge, her shirt just looks unfinished.  And by the way she’s tugging at them, her skinny pants must not be skinny enough.

By the way, should we be worried?  That guy behind Rihanna is either her bodyguard or she should seriously consider using one of her red stilettos as a deadly weapon.

Here are 5 tips on how to look hot without looking sleazy:

Members Only Leather Liquid Leggings

1) She’s Got Leggings: This trend continues to have….legs.  I must admit that black leggings look good paired with long tunics and worn under billowy skirts. But I can’t quite get used to many of you ladies wearing leggings (and only leggings) with short tops.  Even worse, some have mistaken opaque tights or regular pantyhose for leggings.  Not a good look.

2) Put Ya Freakum Dress On: If you’ve got it, I say flaunt it.  Although a tight dress should accentuate your assets, it’s best to leave something to the imagination.  And remember that this type of dress is strictly for a house/beach party or the club; not an office party, wedding, or family gathering.

3) Maximize Your Mini:  A mini-skirt or mini dress can be a great fashion statement. But a mini that’s too short, too revealing, or too tight isn’t hot; it’s hoochie.  Sorry Mariah, who in the above photo is showing way too much cleavage and a little too much leg.

4) Classy Cleavage: Showing a little decolletage makes most women feel more feminine and flirty.  And men of course love it.  However, keep it classy and don’t let your cleavage runneth over.  

Keep the clear heels at home.

 5) High-heels, Not Stripper Pumps: High heels have never been my thing. But I envy Hollywood A-listers like Rihanna, who struts about in designer stilettos like they’re sneakers. Stripper pumps, however, are not high-fashion. And if you have a pair of clear heels, save them for “play” time at home.

Cassie's shaved do is a hair don't.

And whereas I’m not particularly fond of Cassie’s severe haircut (see photo to the left), I’m really feeling Rihanna’s glamour girl mohawk (see photos below).

The style trendsetter wears the rocker hairstyle with panache, and because Rihanna’s ‘do was already short, now that her hair is buzz cut evenly on the sides, it’s not as schizophrenic as Cassie’s lopsided cut.

Whatever you think of Rihanna’s style, you have to give the girl props for not being afraid to take risks.  At first glance, I loved Rihanna in this daring Dolce and Gabbana tux — a masculine fashion statement offset by a pair of  uber-feminine black pumps.   Given a second gander, however, I was taken aback by the jacket’s poofy sleeves.  My final verdict? Dressing like a boy hasn’t looked this fierce since Grace Jones’ ’80s power suit.  Hot.

1) Michelle Obama is America’s first African-American first lady! It’s almost surreal that Michelle and her beautiful daughters — along with a bright guy named Barack you may have heard of — have forever changed the First Family portrait. Michelle is a study in elegance, and despite a few fashion faux pas, has impeccable taste.

2) Rihanna emerged as major beauty and style trend-setter. She took risks with her hip hair styles and youthful flair for fashion, and most of the time they paid off. The Barbados-beauty also continues to be a pop and hip-hop darling — her “Disturbia” and “Take a Bow” were two of the year’s hottest singles.

3) Wendy Williams’s irreverent radio show brightens my otherwise ho-hum 9-5 grind. So I was in DVR heaven when a six-week preview of the New York City shock jock’s gossip girl talk show, “The Wendy Williams Show” debuted over the summer. The show, along with Wendy’s big wigs and glamazon wardrobe, returns in syndication in summer 2009. For those hot mamas out there familiar with Wendy, How you doin’? Watch this clip of her near on-air cat fight with reality TV witch Omarosa.

4) Beyonce’s concept album, “I Am…Sasha Fierce” was a dud. But her dip-it-low to one side with only one knee bent dance move in the video for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It),” is one of the year’s most memorable moments.   And SNL’s parody of the sexy video featuring Justin Timberlake is hilarious.  Click on this link to see the skit.
