Vampires are still hot. But thanks to “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” the monster currently atop Hollywood’s A-list is the werewolf. Or better yet, as Shakira has so nimbly introduced, the She Wolf! Problem is, I don’t want to be either for Halloween.

Are Gladiator Sandals Like So Summer 2008?

I know I’m asking a lot of questions this week, but I love it when Hot Mama Daily readers talk back. So I want to know, am I the only urbanite still pondering the purchase of yet another pair of gladiator sandals?

I bought a brown leather pair from Nine West at the end of last summer and they are surprisingly super comfortable.

I cannot stress how much I love H&M. The tres chic retailer supplies the latest fashions at recessionista prices. Today I stopped by the H&M on 5th Avenue in Manhattan and scooped up a cute black top with metallic stripes for only $10.

There were also plenty of trendy hanbags for $5-10; my closet overruneth with totes, purses, clutches, and hobos, so I had to resist the urge.

I’m not sure when the sale ends, so hurry to an H&M near you.

New York designer Erica Simon’s newest collection is called “Diyite,” the Haitian word for “dignity.” Simon is donating 25% of the collection’s sales to SOIL, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting soil resources, empowering communities, and transforming wastes into resources in Haiti — one of the poorest yet most culturally rich countries in the western hemisphere.

Simon’s inspiration for the collection came from a seed necklace from Haiti she received as a gift. Her handcrafted Diyite necklaces ($160) are made with sterling silver, smoky quartz, and job’s tears, and represent her version of hand-made peonia-seed necklaces straight Haiti (also available for $16; 75% of proceeds will go directly to SOIL).

Loella Medina Jewelry for Mother’s Day

Loella Medina is a self-taught designer who crafts beautiful jewelry from precious and semiprecious stones. Read Hot Mama Daily’s interview with the Dominican Republic native (see photo), who has great gifts for Mom on sale in her Etsy stores.

Hot Mama Daily: What’s the inspiration for your jewelry?

Loella: Overall my jewelry collections are inspired by my Caribbean culture which is a colorful, flirty, and happy. I like to use bright colors for my designs and so even the smallest pairs of earrings will stand out.

HMD: What are your favorite stones and materials to work with?

L: I use precious and semi precious gemstones; Ruby, Sapphire, Topaz, Garnet, Tourmaline, Peridot, Amethyst, and Quartz. I also use sterling silver and gold filled wire. I am currently making a transition to 18k solid gold, fine silver, and incorporating diamonds to some of my designs.

HMD: When did you start your own jewelry line?

L: I started making jewelry for myself and family more than ten years ago, and I started my own jewelry line about three years ago after getting so many requests from friends and family to buy my jewelry.

L: Right now, I sell mainly on Etsy and in person, by request and at trunk shows. I have an affordable bridal jewelry line on Etsy called La Boda Collection and I am working on a new “daily wear” jewelry line.

HMD: How would you describe your personal style?

L: I would describe my personal style as a combination of luxe-chic, bohemian, and romantic. My jewelry designs are contemporary with a classic flare and full of colors that are always eye catching.

L: From my Spring 2009 collections my favorite pieces are the Galilea Earrings (20% of all sales will be donated to the Emily N. Carey Harbor School, an independent private high school in East Harlem, New York), and the Chanthou earrings and bracelet.
