I recently sampled the divine Bamboo Lemongrass Body Polish, which gently exfoliates dry, flaky skin with powered bamboo and walnut shell. The scrub also contains sea algae and herbal extracts, and almond proteins that remove impurities and leave the skin supple and moist. Each time I use it, it feels like I’m polishing my skin with fine sugar granules. I also received the heavenly bergamot and lemon-scented Macadamia Nut Moisturizing Creme, an international blend of moisture-rich macadamia nut butter, organic jojoba oil, and exotic orchid extract; it left my skin silky smooth.

Jaime Earl was started by a resourceful Mama who literally cooked up recipes in her home kitchen that would soothe her daughter’s sensitive skin. Drawing upon her knowledge of herbs, plants and essences, the mother experimented with different potions and lotions until she discovered the right combinations. For the first time, her daughter found real relief using the treatments she created.

As word spread, the mother and daughter found themselves developing, testing, making and sending a growing list of products to people all over the country. I’m glad they did, and I’ll be back for more Jaime Earl products.

Djuana, a business school administrator, offers the following tips:

“I’m a 45 year old woman of color and have had challenging skin with frequent acne breakouts since my teenage years.

Over the years, I have tried everything from over the counter products to dermatologist prescriptions and I have finally found products that for the last few years have made a HUGE difference in my skin – Dr. Bronner’s Magic Pure Castile Classic Soaps and Kirk’s Natural Original Coco Castile Soap. Both are very gentle to the skin, balancing it but not stripping it of natural oils.

My issue with my skin had always been an overproductive sebaceous gland and these products have done the job for me in controlling the oiliness without creating dryness. Another product that I use faithfully to even out my skin tone is Carol’s Daughter Scar Butter. I mix it with pure Vitamin E oil and it’s been very effective.”

Like me, however, you probably have a girlfriend who’s a longtime perfume-nista. So I enlisted the assistance of my always sweet smelling friend Simone.
Here are her top fragrance picks:
1) Narciso Rodriguez for her eau de parfum ($89, Sephora)

My sexiest fragrance ever… Men love it. I’ve been stopped on the street for this one. It’s Modern, Feminine, Elegant and Sexy. It has a unique blend of musk, pink floral, soft amber, and voluptuous woods. I will wear this one for as long as I can!

Narciso Rodriguez for her

2) Clinique Wrappings ($80, Amazon.com)

Cult classic among those who know it. Hard to find. It’s only ever available in the US in limited holiday editions. I’ve been wearing Wrappings for about 15 years. It’s a very distinctive fragrance, fresh and clean, yet provocative and edgy. It reminds me a little of fresh ginger.

3) Gucci by Gucci eau de parfum ($80, Neiman Marcus)

This a new fragrance for me. So far so very good. It’s dark and musky, yet spicy and passionate and I love it. I’ve been getting a lot of comments on this one as well. Both men and women seem to love it.

Honorable Mention:

Black Cashmere by Donna Karan: Discontinued but one of my favorites. I can actually still find it online.

Chaos by Donna Karan: Another discontinued favorite. I’m all about looking and feeling slimmer without going to the gym, and I’m curious if any of my Hot Mama Daily readers have tried this “magical” cream yet?
According to the brand’s website, here’s how My Silhouette! works:
NIVEA’s research developed a natural Bio-Slim Complex that combines the active ingredients White tea and Anise extract for a dual action of slimming & reshaping.

White tea slims down fat cells and prevents them from growing back.

Anise extract activates skin’s cell-metabolism which leads to increased collagen production [...]
Post from: Hot Mama Daily

NIVEA’s research developed a natural Bio-Slim Complex that combines the active ingredients White tea and Anise extract for a dual action of slimming & reshaping.

White tea slims down fat cells and prevents them from growing back.

Anise extract activates skin’s cell-metabolism which leads to increased collagen production to tone and reshape the skin.

Thanks for the tip Tyra! Regular use of NIVEA My Silhouette! reportedly leads to a reduction of up to 3 cm on trouble zones such as thighs, hips, waist and belly, with noticeable results in just four weeks.

Once I get a tube (available on Drugstore.com), I’ll blog back and let you know if I see any results. I may even take Tyra’s four-week “My Silhouette/My Skinny Jeans” challenge for a chance to win a $5,000 shopping spree. You can sign up too!

Liz Earle’s gentle Orange Flower Hand Wash leaves my hands clean, moisturized, and smelling citrus fresh. The British beauty and skin care company’s wash is infused with orange flower water, pro-vitamin B5, and seven essential oils.
To ensure my hands are silky smooth, after the hand wash I use Liz Earle’s Hand Repair lotion ($38) made with echinacea, hops, essential oils, and natural vitamin E.

In April I wrote about Skechers’ “Shape-Ups,” fitness shoes that claim to promote weight loss, tone your muscles, and improve your posture without going to the gym.

Skechers Shape-Ups, $110

To me it was a no-brainer. With a promise like that, I needed a pair ASAP. Luckily, the helpful folks at Skechers sent me the Mary-Jane style in black (pictured in tan to the right) to try out.

So I took my Shape-Ups for a test drive across the Brooklyn Bridge. First off, I must admit they aren’t the most fashion-forward looking shoes. They have an elevated sole — apparently that’s where the fitness magic happens — and walking on the wedge “rocker bottoms” takes some getting used to.

I’m a little paranoid by nature, so more than once I thought passersby were staring at my club kid fitness shoes. But I literally hit my stride by the time I completed the 20-minute walk across the bridge, followed by a 10-minute walk to my apartment. My calves felt tingly and tighter and my posture felt more upright. The Shape-Ups seemed to be working, and I plan to wear them again.

My verdict? Although I wouldn’t recommend the shoes for long walks if you live in a fashion-centric city like New York, they’re fine for running errands close to home, walking around the house, or doing morning laps at your local track. And they’re perfect for smaller city working gals, suburban moms, and teens looking for an alternative to the gym workout.

Beija Flor (the name means hummingbird in Portuguese) jeans are made in Brazil, but come in U.S. sizes 0 – 16. Here, co-founder/designer Emilie Whitaker explains how her brand can help you get your sexy back (and accentuate your sexy back):

Hot Mama Daily: What’s the inspiration behind Beija-Flor?

Emilie Whitaker: My friend Katherine and I went jeans shopping and neither of us could find jeans that fit us, much less flattered our bodies. Then my Mom brought me a pair of jeans from Brazil. They fit me. They fit Katherine. They fit my sister. It was like the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” movie, and we realized there was something special about Brazilian denim. Within a year we were interviewing jeans factories all over Brazil, coming up with our own flattering fit, and a few months later the Beija-Flor brand was born.

HMD: What’s the significance of the bird logo?

EW: Our jeans are manufactured in the state of Espirito Santo, my father’s home state, and the state bird is the hummingbird. As a child, my great aunt in Brazil took me to the Santa Teresa hummingbird reserve in my father’s home state. The experience had a great effect on me, and was an inspiration for the “beija-flor,” brand.

Beija Flor's Jennifer jean, front view

HMD: How does women’s body image in Brazil/South American differ from in the U.S.?

EW: A lot of Brazilian women tend to have a certain confidence in their physical appearance. They seem less afraid to show off their bodies, especially their curves, and this is definitely reflected in Brazilian fashion design. Brazilian women tend to wear clothes that accentuate their curves rather than trying to hide them. This positive body image is directly correlated with their desire to live life to the fullest.

Beija Flor's Jennifer jeans

HMD: Who is the typical Beija-Flor customer?

EW: We like to call women who wear Beija-Flor Jeans, Beija-believers. Usually Beija-believers’ common bond is that they have typically had a hard time finding stylish jeans that fit. We have customers who love our pockets because they give them more of a rear-end, and we have customers who love us because we make room for their rear-end!

HMD: In this economy, how can women justify paying top-dollar for a pair of jeans?

EW: Actually, our sales have not been affected by these challenging economic times, probably because women see the value in a high-quality, great fitting pair of jeans. It comes down to a Cost-Per-Wear mentality. When money is tight, people tend to spend less on more frivolous or special-occasion garments, and try to invest in wardrobe items they will use the most.
