Readers younger than 30 probably won’t know what I’m talking about, but I’ve been a fan of Holly Robinson Peete’s since she co-starred with hottie Johhny Depp on “21 Jump Street.” There must be something in the water Holly drinks, because the pretty and charitable actress (she runs the HollyRod foundation, dedicated to raising money and awareness for debilitating disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, with hubby Rodney Peete) hasn’t aged a bit.

I’ve already been scooped by the Huffington Post and the New York Daily News, which have appropriately asked if it was in poor taste that the First Lady wore a pair of $540 grey and pink designer sneakers to a food bank that provides low-income individuals and families with food?

I think it’s safe to say that Mrs. Obama didn’t think her fly Lanvin kicks would cause such a stir. But I suspect she’ll be making a trip to J. Crew or the Gap sometime soon to see what more affordable sneaker options they have.

Steal This Look: Mary J. Blige in Valentine’s Day-Ready Red!

Mary J. Blige looks regal in this short-sleeved red gown. It fits like a glove. I would surely need a Pilates class and Yummie Tummie ASAP in order to look as sculpted and toned as Mary. But a girl can dream can’t she? And I was inspired to find a similar dress for less.

Is Taking the “UGG-ly” Plunge Hot or Not?

To UGG or not to UGG? That was the question posed by Hot Mama Daily back in December 2007, and inquiring minds still want to know. I too have been hesitant to take the UGG plunge, especially since the boots retail for $180 bucks. So I did the only thing that makes sense to me — I found a knockoff pair of UGGs at Payless on sale for $34.99.

After a little web research, I found that the metallic gold Payless boots — the Airwalk Metallic Reagan Boot — mimic the UGG Australia “Classic Tall Metallic” Boot. My husband wasn’t too impressed. ”When did you turn into a gold robot?” he asked with a laugh. He added that the boots look like the alien costume from the original “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” “He just doesn’t understand fashion,” I told myself.

But to be honest, I’m not completely sold on the UGG or UGG-wannabe look. The Airwalk version lack support and don’t feel as comfortable as I thought they would, they crinkle at the ankles (see the photo on the left of my feet in the boots), and gold is a rather bold color. On the plus side, my jeans tuck easily into the boots, the interior shearling material is warm, and the exterior manmade material feels water-resistant.

Payless does, however, give you 90 days to return unworn shoes. So my space-y gold boots may not become a permanent fixture in my winter wardrobe. But before I send my Airwalk boots packing, I need some Hot Mama feedback.

Do you like these Airwalk knock-offs?

Or should I splurge and invest in a real pair of UGGs?

I’m a huge “Project Runway” fan, so I’m thrilled whenever I get the chance to interview one of the show’s elite designers. This week I caught up with Season 2 contestant Emmett McCarthy, a former men’s wear designer who has taken the women’s wear industry by storm with his Emmett McCarthy/ EMc2 collection and New York City boutique.

Emmett obviously loves to make women look beautiful, and his timeless dresses are divine on women of color (see the accompanying photos). Here’s what the fab designer had to say about holiday party frocks, the season’s hottest accessories, dressing in a recession, and more:

Hot Mama: What is the trend for this year’s holiday season’s cocktail party fashions?

Emmett McCarthy: This year’s trend is simple silhouettes with deep rich jewel tone colors, belted dresses and tunics for comfort. This holiday the trend is to replace black with deep purple or inky blues.

HM: What is your signature as a designer?

EM: The Emmett McCarthy EMc2 signature is all about updated classic style. Clean lines, flawless fit and tailoring, and exquisite fabrics all at affordable prices.

HM: What accessories compliment rather than distract from a holiday party dress?

EM: Clutches have been [making a comeback] and are prominent this holiday season. Larger clutches and patent leathers dress up any outfit.

HM: In this economic climate, how can women justify splurging on designer clothes?

EM: I believe even in bad economic times women want to feel good about themselves and look good. Investing in a classic dress even in a down economy is reasonable if the dress has versatility to wear again to a wedding or other special occasions.

Fab Summer Footwear For Under $20: Old Navy

I know I bring them up all the time, but I DO love Old Navy. I really do. I think even more than The GAP, and more than Banana Republic. The prices at Old Navy are *always* just right and you can get really nice, chic items that don’t look cheap, yaknowwhatImean?

I just bought (jeez, I really need to slow down on my shopping as of late–right) their new rubber/blend metallic flip-flops. Got both the gold and silver.

They’re great. Word is Old Navy changed up from their foam slippers to a new rubber/blend combo for their flip-flops this year. Why the change? Well I read a few complaints online about their previous foam ones, and buyers weren’t too impressed with the foam model. And, I’m thinking Old Navy wanted to go the Havaianas route (Havaianas are fully rubber and super comfy. I’ll admit they’re great too–will post about those another day

Next up on the Old Navy list we have the Stretch Sateen Ballet Flats .

It is my new flat. They are PERFECT for when your pedicure is not in top shape *clearing throat* and you’re too lazy to re-fresh the pedi (what? My son keeps me busy. Yes, that’s my excuse!) You slip these on and they make ANY outfit casual or summer fancy look perfect. Price? $19.50. Yep. That’s it. They also come in purple, grey, and brown.

Now this one I’m mad about. I paid $68.00 USD for my Dolce Vita gladiators earlier in the spring, remember? But I noticed Old Navy has an eerily similar pair for how much you ask? 19-flippin’-50!!! As in $19.50!!! They’re also available in brown and gold. *Steaming* Arrrgggh!
