Fashion Week: Backstage at Yigal Azrouel

Unlike most backstage areas, Yigal Azrouel’s show had some room to move about and talk to people. I had an opportunity to talk to Polly Osmond, a freelance makeup artist who created the look for Yigal’s show. The majority of the makeup she used was MAC.
Polly told me that the inspiration for this look was “dirty, grimey New York.” She used greys and charcoals in multiple layers with black liquid liner. Under the eye she used gloss to give it that greasy feeling and for the makeup to run into the creases to contribute to that “murky” feeling. The model’s faces were bare and made matte. On the lips she used MAC’s 3N.
When I asked her where in New York she was inspired for this look she told me, “The West Side Highway.”

im from Albany & went to the city NYC alot during my teens & thru college. Im really feeling the hair style, definately has that dirty, grimey ny flair too.
Yes, yes, dirty New York. As much as I want to defend that city against slander, its pollution does affect your skin, your hair, your face. It’s funny that they chose to glamorize that, though. ahh, fashion!
I couldn’t help but giggle when I read “Dirty, grimey, new york.” It reminded me of the Derelicte campaign from “Zoolander” lol, but hey, it works! The look is actually soooo high fashion.
I like the concept of “dirty, grimy NY” but I’m not sure I’d leave my apartment intentionally a doing a “grimy, dirty” look on my face.
