Hissyfit: For the Love of Australia

If Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Ryan Kwanten (below, that’s “Jason Stackhouse” for the True Blood fans out there) are any indicator, only good things come from the land Down Under.

Australia’s latest-to-be-loved import is Hissyfit, a line of beauty goodies that aim to protect, renew and perfect. I can’t guarantee that caliber of results (”perfect” is a pretty bold statement…), but I will admit to a minor infatuation with lip service, an SPF 50 lip balm available in five hues, including clear.

This thick, glossy balm is instantly soothing to chapped or dry lips thanks to the inclusion of shea butter, jojoba and vitamin e – and it lasts for hours.

Packaged in a slim, sanitary tube, you’ll want one of these for every pocket. Consider it the woman’s alternative to Chapstick (though what I am I saying, I love Chapstick too!)

These balms are a bit pricey at $20/each but if you love lippies like I love lippies, they may be worth the splurge.

Cheap Thrill: L’Oreal Infallible Gloss

When it comes to lipgloss, every woman have VERY particular wants – and they can be surprisingly different. While some love a sticky gloss with major staying power, others love a gloss with slip that needs to be constantly reapplied.

L’Oreal’s Infallible Plumping Gloss means that you don’t have to choose, you can have it all. As long as “all,” by your definition, is a smooth, long-lasting gloss with a great wash of color and a bit of plumping power built in.

While the packaging leaves a little to be desired, I do love the soft doe foot applicator – a precise pointed tip lets you paint your pout perfectly.

I’ve been giving Plumped Red a go and I’m a big fan (that’s Plumped Tawny to the left.)

BCA: Purple Lab’s Sealed with a Cure

For Breast Cancer Awareness month, my dear friend (and Purple Lab creatrix) Karen Robinovitz wanted to do something special and meaningful. Last year, she met an inspiring group of women who had lost a good friend to Triple Negative Breast Cancer, a rare and aggressive subtype that she had never heard of (and for the record, I haven’t either.)

When their friend passed, they created The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation to bring awareness to and support research for triple negative breast cancer.

To benefit the org, Karen has created the new SWAC (Sealed with a Cure). This sheer pink gloss with subtle flecks of gold (real gold, none the less) is called Nancy – the legacy of TNBCFsm – and it comes with a love note telling her personal story.

Sephora Celebrates Fame, The Movie!

Fame is scheduled to hit theaters this September 25, and I, for one, am super excited! I remember watching the show as a little girl with my mom, so it brings back really fun and fond memories.

The folks at Sephora must have fond memories of Fame too because they’re introducing the Fame Brilliant Shine Lip Glosses.

Created in partnership with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), the five limited-edition glosses are lustrous, nonsticky and moisturizing - what more could a girl want? (Her own 15 minutes, perhaps? I kid!)

Smooch-Worthy: Korres Lip Butters

On any given day, not an hour goes by without me digging in my purse for a lippie. For regular, on-the-go touch ups, I tend to pass up high maintenance lipsticks and glosses for a nice tinted balm or butter. The added moisture, shine and sheer color are a more low-key breed of glam. One of my staples are Korres Lip Butters.

These natural, paraben and sulfate-free balms have a lovely, creamy texture and add a nice, effortless pop of color. My two favorites are Pomegranate, a sheer coral (so on trend for summer!) and of course, Quince (shown left), a sheer poppy pink. All smell lovely and come in generous sized pots for just $9.

Triple Threat: Avon 3-in-1 Pro Lip Wand

I’m a busy gal, let’s be honest. So, I am ALL ABOUT the multi-tasking magic when it comes to makeup. A new product on my radar that totally fits the bill is Avon’s Pro 3-in-1 Lip Wand ($9.50). Avon Global Creative Color Director Jillian Dempsey (aka Mrs. McDreamy) lent her professional expertise to design this first-ever lip product to include a coordinating pencil, lipstick and gloss in one – cool, right?

“I love to use all three products together to give lips dimensional color,” says Jillian. “I designed these colors to be perfectly coordinated and take the guesswork out of choosing the right liner and lipstick and gloss.”

To use, first define lips and prevent feathering and bleeding with the liner (I like to fill in my entire lip to create a base), then enhance with a layer of lipstick and top off with gloss for a perfect pucker.

I really love that each product can be used alone or together to create an appropriate lip look for any occasion or time of day.

Makeup Show Find: OCC Lip Tar

The Makeup Show showcased an amazing mix of well known brands along with many up and comers. I mentioned Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics quickly in my show recap on Saturday but their Lip Tar ($12.50) is worth its own post.

This innovative formula is the perfect marriage of lipstick and gloss. Lip Tar is intensely pigmented - so just a dab will do you and while it goes on smoothly and moist (like a gloss), it dries to a satin finish (like a lipstick.)

The formula is rich in vitamin E and Hemp Oil, so Lip Tar is good for your lips too!

The only con I can think of is the very simple packaging – it’s perfectly servicable but nothing fancy (see left, the label is on the back). And when it comes to makeup, I AM a sucker for gorgeous packaging. But I dig this product so much, I’ll make an exception.

Lip Tar is available in 12 shades – and some are specifically made for mixing, like the traffic-stopping Traffic (a bold bright yellow) and Tarred (an opaque solid black) while others can be worn right off the rack like Grandma (a classic and totally on-trend 1950’s coral.)
