Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara is a cult favorite and with good reason – it’s a great mascara at an even better price. The brand is now launching Great Lash BIG, a new mascara with the same amazing formula but a BIGGER brush that hits every lash.
To create the commercial for Great Lash Big, Maybelline took a unique approach! BIG, the Great Lash Big mascot, trekked the streets of NYC to find charismatic, aspiring women to make a big impression (and appear in the Great Lash Big Gig)! Take a look at the some behind-the-scenes footage here, along with the final advert:

Dark as Night: MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash
October 4, 2009 by Dina Fierro

There are black mascaras and there are BLACK MASCARAS. MAC’s new Zoom Fast Black Lash falls firmly into the latter category.
This carbon-black formula deposits an intense amount of pigment on lashes, adding length and even a bit of volume. While I’ve got long lashes to begin with, I’ve received more than a few “What mascara are you wearing?” questions while wearing Zoom Fast Black Lash. For the record, that’s DEFINITELY a good thing.
While I love the formula and the results, I will just warn that it requires a little extra care for complete removal. I usually use a makeup cleansing …read more

Designer Rachel Roy is as well known for her flawless appearance as she is her great style and design sense, so when she offered up some beauty tips, I knew Makeup Minute readers would want the scoop!
Check out Rachel’s tidbits below and if you have any questions or comments, please share!
Rachel says:
I feel a great mascara can open the eye and instantly make you look as though you’ve have a good night’s sleep, even when that is not the case. I use 2-3 coats of Lancome Fatale on the top, bottom, and also on the back of the top lashes.

While I’m blessed with pretty long lashes to begin with, that doesn’t stop me from wanting to test every new mascara that crosses my desk. I mean, they COULD always be a bit longer, right? If you agree and you’re looking for a safe way to boost your lashes, you may want to consider DermaQuest’s new DermaLash mascara.
This mascara does double duty, defining eyes and strengthening lashes with a drug-free, non-clumping formula that contains peptides and a proprietary “Lash Growth Promoter Complex.”
The complex helps stimulate hair follicles for full and lengthy lashes and also helps prevent breakage and hair loss. …read more
Amped:L’Oreal Extra Volume Collagen Mascara
August 9, 2009 by Dina Fierro

As far as I’m concerned, some of the best mascara can be found in the drugstore. L’Oreal’s new Extra Volume Collagen Mascara proves me right.
Using a formula infused with both collagen and hyaluronic acid (amazing for plumping and moisturizing skin), this mascara is buildable and lengthens and volumizes lashes.
Housed in the sleek black packaging is a thick brush with dozens of fine bristles that capture every lash. My only complaint? The brush picks up a ton of mascara, you really need to wipe it off fully before using to prevent excess product from landing on your lashes or the surrounding …read more
Get the Look: Amy Adams

The lovely Amy Adams attended the premiere of her new flick, Julie & Julia, last night and Cover Girl makeup artist Molly Stern created her red carpet look. She says:
“It always seems that inspiration ends up coming from the dress. Last night Amy wore a gorgeous full length Carolina Herrera gown with a charcoal and white pattern speckled with gold beading. So I borrowed from that exquisite color palette. We went for a steel and copper smoky lid, gorgeous full lashes, a peachy cheek and a golden amber lip.”

Flaunt Your Curves: Rimmel Sexy Curves

Regardless of your figure, curves are always in style when we’re talking lashes. The good folks at Rimmel know it – and their new Sexy Curves mascara delivers as promised.
The secret to Rimmel’s success is in both the brush (a voluptuous ‘triple plump’ design) AND the formula. Designed to work in tandem, the collagen-enriched mascara contains proteins, vitamins and conditioners that leave lashes strong but amped up!
Don’t ask me the difference between the two hues available – Black or Extreme Black – but you can pick up either at drugstores and other mass retailers like Target nationwide, for about $7.49 …read more
Quick Tip: Applying Mascara

I had a nice little chat a few nights ago with Francesca Roman, resident makeup artist at Butterfly Studio Salon, a really beautiful space in New York’s Flatiron district.
In addition to the applications and lessons she does at Butterfly, Francesca’s done a ton of editorial work and was even Mariah Carey’s makeup artist for a time, so she really knows what she’s talking about. Among the many words of makeup wisdom, she mentioned that most women don’t apply mascara correctly and gave me a great tip that I wanted to pass on to Makeup Minute readers.

Double Duty Beauty: TheBalm Two-Timer
June 16, 2009 by Dina Fierro

Formula be damned, in my opinion, brushes make ALL the difference between a good mascara and bad. TheBalm’s latest trick (or is that treat?), Two-Timer, solves this perennial problem by pairing TWO distinctly different brushes with one great mascara.
On one end is ‘the Definer’, a plastic injection molded brush, that separates and lengthens lashes. On the other end, ‘the Volumizer,’ a curvy twisted spiral that adds volume. I prefer the latter but whatever your mascara desires are, the Two Timer has a brush that fits the bill.

Hot on the heels of Estee Lauder Turbolash and Lancome Oscillation (both vibrating mascaras debuted last year), Prescriptives new Motor Eyes Mascara debuts at counters this month!
While I haven’t had the chance to test this one out yet, the patented vibrating brush is said to volumize, lift and curl – all without clumping or smudging.
Motor Eyes is relatively expensive for a mascara – $32/tube, so hopefully, it’ll be worth the splurge!
It debuts on April 15 at www.prescriptives.com and counters nationwide.
What do you think of the vibrating mascara trend? Are you tempted to go high-tech for gorgeous lashes? Leave a comment …read more
