A Hip and Functional Man Bag is Hard to Find

My boyfriend, Matt, has been on a serious prowl for the perfect man bag, ever since Jim on The Office carried one to practical perfection. As hard as he is trying, he keeps coming up short. They are either too expensive, too girly, or too impractical.

A man bag is a delicate thing. You need to find the perfect balance between masculinity and function. And, if you’re like me, and want an eco-twist on everything you wear, the process can become much more arduous.

In order to make this process a little easier, here I present to you, a few green man bag choices.

A Hemp Bag

This basic bag from Green Feet is made out of 100% sustainably grown and processed hemp. It’s also waterproof, so your precious computer and documents will be safe and sound, even in a downpour. It’s simple design makes it a fashion chameleon and with it’s all-natural color, you may be called a hippie, but you’ll never be called a girl. And at $47.95, the price sure sounds right.

A Hipster Bag

This bag was not made for the boardroom. It’s colorful designs, pockets for your iPod, cellphone, Blackberry and every other tech gadget you can imagine, make this bag perfect for that scruffy trend setting urban-ite you know. Designed by Swiss company Feitrag, you have the power to design your own or go the safe route and purchase a pre-made one. There are tons of colors to choose from. What makes this bag so green? It’s made out of discarded truck tarpaulins. A word of caution: these bags need to be shipped overseas (save you lucky Europeans!) and run around $160.00 American.

A Handsome Bag

This classic man bag from Passchal belongs on the shoulder of a man in a sleek power suit. It’s faux leather look comes from the recycled truck and tractor-tire inner tubes it is made out of. Don’t worry — going from tire to bag is a very cleansing process. This bag is also super high tech — not only does it come with pockets to save your precious gear, the bag itself lights up when you open it. You’ll be able to find what you need instantly! This bag is $180.00 from EcoHandbags.

A Bag for the Hurried

This bike messenger bag is perfect for the guy on the go. He’s not as posh as the “handsome” man, but feels more grown-up than the “hip” dude. Made out of reclaimed inner tire tubes and old mill fabrics, you can get yours for $121.00 from EcoHandbags.

Matt’s probably going to get that last bag for his next birthday. It’s definitely what suits him best! (Despite what he may think!)

Wait, so Matt didn’t get the Man Bag fever after Jack Bauer pulled one off so well in Season 4 of 24? Because it really should have kicked in then.

My current laptop bag is nice and all, but I want something hipper for when I get my Macbook. So I shall return to these suggestions. Except for those costing ludicrous amounts of money.
