Diet Coke Plus Vitamins and Minerals!

April 15, 2007 by Teri Cosenzi

My great hubby just went out in the pouring rain to pick up a few necessities at the grocery store. And he brought me back a new Diet Coke, Diet Coke Plus.

dt cole plusThe label, which is a pretty silver and sky blue with a sky blue cap, says it is Diet Coke with Vitamins & Minerals. When did this happen?

I guess this means that we will have even more reasons to choose a diet beverage, rather than just wanting to cut down on calories. We can do it for our health. Diet Coke Plus is “the first nutrient-enhanced carbonated soda to be offered by a major brand”.

I will admit that I am a Diet Coke devotee, as I drink 2 – 3 glasses a day, and this will not change my habit a bit. Will I choose to purchase this new enhanced version? Absolutely! Why? I don’t know. Maybe because it says it is better for me, and I sort-of believe it. And it tastes exactly the same, so why not?

Will you try the new Diet Coke Plus?

Even with vitamins and minerals, pop is not good for your bones. I’m going to steer clear of pop.

  2. Teri says:

    Saving Diva -

Oh, I so know that Diet Coke is not good for me… but is my one ONLY vice. ;)

Funny, you should say “pop”. Are you from the Midwest? I grew up in Ohio, and that is what we called it there. But back here in the Northeast it is Soda.

  3. Teri says:

Dangerous – I know how bad it really is for me.

The artificial sweetener aside, it is just not good AT ALL. But like I said, it is the only vice I have left. I plan on gradually tapering off from 2 – 3 glasses a day though, which I usually do in the Summer or warmer months, anyway. But then all I drink is iced tea.

    Is that any better?

  4. Christina says:

I’m not a huge soda person – but when I drink it, I drink Diet Coke (and diet orange, but we’re not talking about that). I think its great that they are adding some of these good things, but I wonder, with all the other bad stuff in diet drinks, how much of those vitamins and minerals are accessible to our body?

  5. Teri says:

Oy – Christina! I wish I had an answer.

All I know is that the marketing is good, and to my initial mindset, I just may be doing something good while taking in something bad?

The idea is working. As I filled my car up with gas yesterday, my son ran into the little convenience store to grab something and I asked him to grab me a Diet Coke. He saw the new Diet Coke with Vitamins & Minerals, and brought that out. He said maybe it will be good for me – and added that I drink too much Diet Coke!

  6. Christina says:

Marketing is great, no doubt about it. ;) But I guess if there is a chance that it might be better for us than plain ol’ diet Coke, then chug a lug! :)

  7. Teri says:

It still isn’t good for us – I love it, anyway. But I only enjoyed one glass today!

  8. Tali says:

It’s nice that coke is thinking about health but I know that the quantity of vitamins in those drinks is rather insignificant and coke is very acidic. That’s why people use it to clean instruments. It works really well in that respect. But hey its probably better than just normal coke!

  9. Teri says:

I have read about the things that Coke, in general can do. I have actually seen it eat paint off of a bike – sometimes I am afraid to think of what it is doing to my insides.

And I should mention, that as I am writing this, I am drinking a Diet Coke Plus!

  10. maggie says:

    interesting…

  11. Tali says:

Lol I guess we all drink coke or pepsi, and our stomaches all contain HCl, pH 1-2, and thank goodness we also have a mucous lining and bicarb to neutralise it all :)
Still I get most of my vitamins from fruit, veges and the odd pill

  12. Tali says:

Oops that was meant to be stomach.

  13. Mamapossum says:

I tried the new DC+ this morning–it’s ok. My fav is still the “Real Thing” and DDP. Where I’m from, we call all soft drinks Ckoe, ya’ll!

  14. Teri says:

Tali – I certainly do not depend on the Vitamins & Minerals from Diet Coke Plus – I think I am just glad to know that there might be something a bit beneficial in there for me!

Mamapossum – I used to live on Diet Dr. Pepper in College – I think it had just come out. I haven’t had a sip in years though!

  15. Tali says:

I had some diet coke last night after dinner. My husband sometimes brings it home from work where he can get it for 25 cents a can (they don’t have the vitamin kind).
I’m not a fan of Dr Pepper because it has some kind of maraschino taste to it. I guess I’m not used to it. My hubbie loves that taste though. He also likes sasparilla …

  16. Teri says:

25 cents a can – WOW, what a great deal.

I have heard of Sasparilla, but I really don’t know what it is!

  17. Tali says:

    Yeah its a great deal.
Maybe they will intro the diet coke plus to machines at work :)

Sarsparilla (sorry spelt it wrong before) is basically used in root beer.
I like ginger beer but can’t stand root beer. It has a very strange taste to me. I guess everyone has different taste buds though and are brought up differently on various drinks and food.

  18. Teri says:

That would be a good thing. ;)

  19. UMPISteph says:

I am a complete Coke addict. I don’t smoke, rarely drink, and don’t do drugs, so I guess I’m allowed this one.
I drank tons of regular Coke for years, then switched to Diet (no calories). Now that I’ve discovered DC+ I’m hooked. I eat the right number of fruit, veggies, etc. every day, but the fact that I can feed my “addiction” and get at least some benefit out of it is fantastic! Plus, the flavor is great. If anything, it tastes more like regular Coke.

  20. SavingDiva says:

    Teri,
Yes I am from the midwest….so you were right about the pop thing. Love your blog!

  21. Teri says:

Thanks for the compliment, Saving Diva. I hope you continue to enjoy Pretty by Nature.

  22. tonypeters says:

my opinion is that your better of drinking a regular coke. althought the sugar content is very bad for you…replacing it with artificial sweeteners is harmful to your metabolism. The addition of synthetic, manufactured vitamins adds a new dimension because these type of viatmins can actually leach more nutrients from your body and are treated like drugs by the body!

  23. Tali says:

I’ve never heard evidence of artificial sweeteners leeching vitamins out of the body, though they can cause calcium loss because of its high phosphorus content.
The sweeteners can’t be metabolized by your body like sugar since they are manmade amino acids (or modified sugar molecules that aren’t sugar anymore, like splenda). Sorbitol in excess quantities can cause bloating and diarrhoea and saccharin has been attributed to bladder cancer in male rats but not humans or even female rats.
The only people who should never take artificial sweeteners esp aspartame are those with PKU, a rare genetic disorder that stops you from metabolizing phenylalanine and results in brain damage.

I guess apart from these people with this disorder, the rest of us are safe with moderate amounts of diet coke. Actually it’s a great discovery for those losing weight or with diabetes. I just drink 1 a day during hot evenings.

  24. Tali says:

oops sorry I meant coke in general has high phosphorus content that cause calcium loss, not the sweeteners themselves

  25. gordman says:

Well I don’t know about that, diet coke plus vitamins? It sounds quite unreal. I mean coke is coke and everybody know it’s not the healthier drink, adding some vitamins makes me be even more suspicious… You can’t just place vitamins there and expect to have great effects.
