March Madness Giveaway – Beaded Jewelry

We at Splendicity are extremely excited about our re-launch and in order to properly mark this event with you, our readers, we are holding a month-long March Madness giveaway celebration.  Each day, during the month of March, a Splendicity blog will host a day-long giveaway. Leaky Life Zulugrass Jewelry is beautiful, made of sustainable resources, and helps a community to thrive.

Philip and Kay Leaky wanted to develop a way to help their Maasi neighbors, support their families, after drought substantially changed their way of life. They came up with the Leaky Life Zulugrass jewelry company as a way for the local Kenyan bush women to earn money. While the Maasi men drove the cattle hundreds of miles farther afield, the women used grass to craft lovely bead jewelry.

Soon the women were harvesting grass, one blade at a time. The long grass was dried and cut into bead-size pieces and dyed lovely hues – blues, greens, reds, yellows, pinks, purples, earth and natural tones – which were then strung into necklaces and bracelets. The Leakeys added brilliant Czech glass beads to their designs, mixing them with the soft luster of the grass beads and giving sparkle and a contemporary flair to the jewelry. Zulugrass was born.
