Mineral Oil is Yuck. Discuss. This Time, with Back Up

You know how I hate Mineral Oil? I needed to know why, so I asked the Beauty Brains and they came up with an amazing 5-point answer for me. Please tell me what you think.

Also, you know what else they said? That products that claim to not be tested on animals may not be tested by animals by the particular company that claims not to have tested them, but the raw ingredients themselves must be tested on animals, that’s the only way they are deemed safe. So sorry, Marley, all products are tested on animals. According to a cosmetic chemist.

Internet sad face.

I have gotten over my fear of mineral oil – really its just as natural as any other oil, comes right out of the earth. :) I do think it’s bad rep stems from marketing hype – but thats just me. Let the battle begin! :)

Good to see you back, Kim – we missed you! :)

So sorry about the “no animal testing” revelation. Fortunately, there is a lot less animal testing going on and we continue to work toward developing suitable alternatives to this testing. We’ll get it soon enough.

And for mineral oil, well like Christina said it’s as natural as anything else we obtain from Mother Earth like air and water.

The animal testing info makes complete sense. I would like to know if there are products that have been tested in the past and are not being tested anymore. I would feel better using those if it is possible. I guess to be consistent with my feelings, I’d have to quit using makeup and a lot of hair products.

Also, I agree about the mineral oil; and it seems to hold moisture in as well as remove makeup. I don’t know why it and silicone oils have been so demonized.

yes, this mineral oil thing is mind boggling at times. Almost every cream I have has mineral oil. Does anyone know if there is a link to the thoughts about mineral oil in facial creams actually makes your skin wrinkle? Wonder if people have allergic reactions to mineral oil in cosmetics?

  5. Liz,
Hypoallergenic is a complete marketing technique. You are allowed to claim hypoallergenic as long as the allergic rate is no more than 4%.
So Yes which plenty of people would have an allergic reaction to mineral oil. Think of all the natural things in life that people are cause an allergic reaction.
    Pretty crazy to think about.
