So unless you have been living under a rock I’m sure you’ve heard about the BPA controversy that has been swirling aroung for the past couple of years. BPA refers to bisphenol A which is chemical compound that is toxic at certain levels and could maybe sorta, depending on who you talk to, be linked to cancer, abnormal sex organs and infertility later in life. Maybe. At certain levels. But you don’t need to worry your pretty head about that. The government will let you know when the levels present in so many things you use EVERY DAY get too high.
Right now it’s so low there’s no risk at all. Probably. Here’s an article on Grist about it. Some things that contain the highest amounts of BPA and should probably be avoided are anything made from polycarbonate plastic that you would use for food or drink. There are lots of great alternatives to hard plastic water bottles and “tupperware” that are available. We swtiched to good old-fashioned Pyrex containers that are great. If you have babies and young children, the clear plastic bottles and cups that are so prevalent are an area of concern. If you have them I know that some Babies R’ Us locations will take them back for store credit but you should check with your specific location. Safe Mama is a great resource for which bottles and cups are BPA free.

Also some of the highest levels of BPA are found in canned goods such as baby formula, canned soup and tomato sauce to name a few. I have no recommendations on what you should do about all of this, just thought I would bring it up and share the recent article. As if you don’t have enough to worry about.

Planet Green has an article I saw today about making your own organic baby food. If you’re healthy on the inside that translates to outer beauty. The best way to get those habits started early is to get your kids used to the taste of “real” food. I am no organic nazi. We try to stick with what’s local and in season. There are certain things that are more important to me to buy organic than others, like the dirty dozen. Making your own baby food is sooo cost efficient and it’s greener. Little to no packaging, fresh stuff you can pick up at the Farmer’s Market for pennies and you know exactly what went into the food your baby is eating. There is no reason to stock up on “organic” jarred food at a premium.

This is what we did with the bug and it worked out so well for us even with me working outside of the home all day. It was so easy to do. I would make large batches and freeze them in ice cube trays or glass jars for later. Wholesome Baby Food is also a great resource for getting started. But it’s pretty easy to figure out. The bug’s favorites were golden delicious applesauce and cauliflower. If you buy packaged applesauce, check out how much added sugar is in one little container. They’re apples, they’re already sweet. Like I need a more hyper child…um no thanks. Oh and I would eat it too. Warm sweet potato puree tastes like heaven.

Kids are weird.
They are odd, little people that live in your home. One day they’re these larval, immobile creatures with floppy heads and tiny mouths. Then, suddenly, they’re walking, talking little humans capable of saying “MAMA!” as they stare at your husband.

They are odd, little people that live in your home. One day they’re these larval, immobile creatures with floppy heads and tiny mouths. Then, suddenly, they’re walking, talking little humans capable of saying “MAMA!” as they stare at your husband.

Strangely, they need much of the same things we do. Food. Shelter. Moisturizing.

In the old days, that meant slathering on cotton ball after cotton ball of baby oil.

Baby oil, in case you don’t know, is a by-product of the production of gasoline. It’s actually mineral oil–a colorless, odorless liquid. Savvy marketers decided to add fragrance and market the readily available waste product as Baby Oil.

In the history of advertising over substance, this decision is, perhaps, only equalled by Proctor & Gamble’s decision to market Secret Deodorant to women by changing the packaging but not the formula…adding their famous tag-line to try to show how it was made for women.

Enough history.

Today, we have wonderful, new alternatives to the chemical-laden, wasteful, potentially cancerous mineral oil. We have the power of sunflower seed oil!

Little Twig Baby Oil is filled with all kinds of fragrant natural oils and works great with our home-made wipe recipe.

This way, you don’t have to feel like you’re wiping your baby with a gallon of crude oil.
