I’ve been wanting to make some candles for a while now but I just haven’t had the motivation. I found this recipe for making your own eco-friendly candles and I’m so there. Has anyone made your own candles? I did it once at camp when I was a kid and I never forgot it, it was so much fun. Do you have any tips? What are your favorite essential oils to use? These also look quite promising. Hmm decisions.

Planet Green has a couple of recipes for homemade shampoo and conditioner today. Have you ever made your own shampoo? I’ve made lots of hair masks, treatments, rinses etc., but never proper shampoo. Why? Well I’m always afraid it’s going to strip my hair of it’s moisture. I can’t use just anything and have it work for me. For anyone who has, has it added moisture and all the good stuff or is it strictly utilitarian? Like hey, I’m in the woods and I’m dirty. My hair stinks but oh look I have some soap flakes and essential oil.” I found …read more

I came across this clip on YouTube and I really enjoyed the lesson in making your own beauty treatments. I am a visual learner so things like this are much more interesting to me when I can actually see someone doing it. They make it look easy peasy which for the most part it is. Since we are in Farmer’s Marketseason, it’s a great opportunity to pick up a few items and get all lovely for pennies. Seriously, pennies. Okay maybe a dime but still really cost effective. I am so going to make that all purpose balm. I think the lemon …read more

So last week I got a drastic haircut. Well I guess you can call any haircut for me drastic because I never get my hair cut. She took off about 4-5 inches to create a swingy, blunt bob. Partly it was just for a change but mostly it was just to cut all the unhealthy, uneven parts off. A clean slate if you will. I had been adamant about being able to still pull it back into a ponytail if need be but then I realized I had slipped into this bad habit of only wearing it in a ponytail. …read more

I am so all about body scrubs especially ones with brown sugar. This one from Nature Girl looks so incredible I think I might eat it if it was in my shower. I used to have a sugar scrub WAY back in like the 90’s that I was obsessed with. I couldn’t possibly tell you the name of it (I drank too much booze in college to remember). I know it was brown sugar, vanilla and orange scented and left my skin SO soft and silky it was insane. I moved out of state and couldn’t find it anymore so I …read more
Smells Like Teen Spirit

Nothing reminds me of summer and my teen years like the smell of the ocean rolling in in the morning and Vanilla musk. I don’t know what it is with teenage girls and vanilla. I think it’s written into our genetic code or something. All 15 year old girls must smell like sugar cookies and pudding. I used Coty Vanilla Musk so much that the scent now makes me a little nauseous. I do however still like the faint aroma of vanilla, just as long as it’s subtle and not that sickeningly sweet sugar smell.
Imagine my glee when I found Kuumba …read more

Kids are weird.
They are odd, little people that live in your home. One day they’re these larval, immobile creatures with floppy heads and tiny mouths. Then, suddenly, they’re walking, talking little humans capable of saying “MAMA!” as they stare at your husband.
Strangely, they need much of the same things we do. Food. Shelter. Moisturizing.
In the old days, that meant slathering on cotton ball after cotton ball of baby oil.
Baby oil, in case you don’t know, is a by-product of the production of gasoline. It’s actually mineral oil–a colorless, odorless liquid. Savvy marketers decided to add fragrance and market the readily …read more
Put Your Hand Down…You Shouldn’t Be That Sure

I would love to live in a world of flower-filled fields, where all of my bodily functions could be controlled by daisies and pretty thoughts. In this fantasy land, bees would gladly give me little parcels of honey, my headaches could be controlled with the dew from a lily, and the crisp, fresh air would dry the sweat from my skin with nary a whiff of odor.
But, since we don’t live in that world, we did something else. We made farms where we force bees to make honey by the truckload. I take Tylenol, not dew.
And I sweat.
Oh, so, long …read more
