I found this recipe for making your own eco-friendly candles and I’m so there. Has anyone made your own candles? I did it once at camp when I was a kid and I never forgot it, it was so much fun. Do you have any tips? What are your favorite essential oils to use? These also look quite promising. Hmm decisions.

So last week I got a drastic haircut. Well I guess you can call any haircut for me drastic because I never get my hair cut. She took off about 4-5 inches to create a swingy, blunt bob. Partly it was just for a change but mostly it was just to cut all the unhealthy, uneven parts off. A clean slate if you will. I had been adamant about being able to still pull it back into a ponytail if need be but then I realized I had slipped into this bad habit of only wearing it in a ponytail.
So now I feel a little more “hep” as the kids say. Very little upkeep except for a little pomade stuff to tame fly-aways and add a little definition.

I was using the hub’s manly man hair pomade that reeked of alcohol and pine trees. I decided to get something that wasn’t quite so industrial that I could call my own. Aesop’s Violet Leaf Hair Balm is PERFECT. It uses Camellia Nut, Carrot Oil and lavender. It doesn’t feel sticky or make my hair hard as a rock. It actually makes the parts I used it on feel softer. The scent is really faint but it does add a fresh whiff that doesn’t smell fake or perfumey. You only need a tiny bit to do the job so it should last for a while, which for the price is what I would expect. I had a gift card that I have had since Christmas so I felt like using it for something indulgent was necessary. I am not disappointed at all. Has anyone tried any of Aesop’s hair treatments before? Rants or raves?

I am so all about body scrubs especially ones with brown sugar. This one from Nature Girl looks so incredible I think I might eat it if it was in my shower. I used to have a sugar scrub WAY back in like the 90’s that I was obsessed with. I couldn’t possibly tell you the name of it (I drank too much booze in college to remember). I know it was brown sugar, vanilla and orange scented and left my skin SO soft and silky it was insane. I moved out of state and couldn’t find it anymore so I would occasionally whip up my own. My recipe consisted of brown sugar, crushed almonds (really finely crushed), whatever oil You might have on hand, Vitamin E oil and orange zest.

A small batch of this would last me about two weeks when kept in the fridge. I would imagine that you could add essential oils of your choosing and whatever else and it would be fantastic. Oh and it makes your bathroom smell like cake.

Nothing reminds me of summer and my teen years like the smell of the ocean rolling in in the morning and Vanilla musk. I don’t know what it is with teenage girls and vanilla. I think it’s written into our genetic code or something. All 15 year old girls must smell like sugar cookies and pudding. I used Coty Vanilla Musk so much that the scent now makes me a little nauseous. I used Coty Vanilla Musk so much that the scent now makes me a little nauseous. I do however still like the faint aroma of vanilla, just as long as it’s subtle and not that sickeningly sweet sugar smell.

Imagine my glee when I found Kuumba Made’s Vanilla Musk at Whole Foods a few months ago. Kuumba Made fragrances are oil based and there are no petroleum based ingredients, alcohols, Parabens, Sulfites, Dipropolyne Glycol, dilutants, or animal products in their fragrances. The scent is so light and subtle that I love wearing it. It comes in a concentrated roll-on so you really only need like a dot here and a dab there. I guess I will always be a teenager at heart, stuck in the 90’s no less. Where’s a scrunchy and matching Keds when you need them.

For a chance to win a most decidedly adult fragrance, Badgly Mischka’s Fleurs de Nuit, check out Amy over at The Scented Life. All you have to do is read her original review of the perfume adn leave a comment. Schwag, yeah!

Head on over to LUSH to see some of your old favorites that have been brought back by popular demand. Don’t you just hate it when you fall in love with something and then the company goes out of business or they discontinue a product? The back from the dead goodies are only available online so if you feel truly desperate you might find yourself pulling an Elaine just so you don’t run out.
Head on over to LUSH to see some of your old favorites that have been brought back by popular demand. Don’t you just hate it when you fall in love with something and then the company goes out of business or they discontinue a product? Well my LUSHlies, you will not have to feel pained any longer. The back from the dead goodies are only available online so if you feel truly desperate you might find yourself pulling an Elaine just so you don’t run out. I don’t know if this is a limited time only thing either. I already have Ne Worry Pas bath bomb on my short list. Decadence awaits.

They are odd, little people that live in your home. One day they’re these larval, immobile creatures with floppy heads and tiny mouths. Then, suddenly, they’re walking, talking little humans capable of saying “MAMA!” as they stare at your husband.

Strangely, they need much of the same things we do. Food. Shelter. Moisturizing.

In the old days, that meant slathering on cotton ball after cotton ball of baby oil.

Baby oil, in case you don’t know, is a by-product of the production of gasoline. It’s actually mineral oil–a colorless, odorless liquid. Savvy marketers decided to add fragrance and market the readily available waste product as Baby Oil.

In the history of advertising over substance, this decision is, perhaps, only equalled by Proctor & Gamble’s decision to market Secret Deodorant to women by changing the packaging but not the formula…adding their famous tag-line to try to show how it was made for women.

Enough history.

Today, we have wonderful, new alternatives to the chemical-laden, wasteful, potentially cancerous mineral oil. We have the power of sunflower seed oil!

Little Twig Baby Oil is filled with all kinds of fragrant natural oils and works great with our home-made wipe recipe.

This way, you don’t have to feel like you’re wiping your baby with a gallon of crude oil.

I would love to live in a world of flower-filled fields, where all of my bodily functions could be controlled by daisies and pretty thoughts. In this fantasy land, bees would gladly give me little parcels of honey, my headaches could be controlled with the dew from a lily, and the crisp, fresh air would dry the sweat from my skin with nary a whiff of odor.

But, since we don’t live in that world, we did something else. We made farms where we force bees to make honey by the truckload. I take Tylenol, not dew.

And I sweat.

Oh, so, long ago, Kim did a post in this very blog about organic deodorants and their ineffectiveness, but that was, like, two years ago. Who can remember that long? Plus, I figured I’d add a couple things.

First, your standard deodorants (non-organic) all use an aluminum compound that gets absorbed into the skin. It causes the cells of your sweat glands to swell, there-by closing the ducts that pass out sweat.

Sound good?

Well, it doesn’t to a lot of people. Lots of people say, “Hey! It doesn’t sound like a great idea to put potentially (but unconfirmed) carcinogenic compounds right next to breast tissue!” Others, however, have begun to look into the possibility that the aluminum content around and in us might even be linked to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Needless to say, organic products won’t come within a country mile of aluminum compounds. Unfortunately, that means that they will never work to the level that the chemical stuff will.

So, I will continue to sweat and stink until such time as magic unicorns walk the Earth.

Has anyone who sweats to the level I do (like a warthog…a WARTHOG) ever tried those crystals? Do they actually work?
